Volvo battleslag MOT today

So the year since the last MOT has come around all too quickly and after spending a small fortune last year on new springs, shock absorbers, CV joint, and ball joint last MOT as well as 4 new tyres and brake discs and pads on all 4 corners, this year I'm nervous as I don't have the money to do it this year, anyway I took the old lady to have a checkover from a friend who is a plant mechanic, his findings? Two new tyres and a small fuel leak, so after spending yesterday fixing the problems and valeting the car (total spend £55) we are just about to go visit the MOT man, fingers crossed he will agree with my mate and this will be painless, will have a result by teatime but in the meantime I have just taken a pic of the old slag for you all to perv over

Good luck. I always find presenting a clean car is worth the time and effort. No tester wants to have to wade through somebody else's detritus to test seat belts etc!

I think she's looking a bit classy at the minute so fingers crossed Mr tester man will be impressed, he did comment last year that it's one of the most solid old cars he's tested for a long time, no rot, repairs or welding underneath at all so hopefully he still thinks that today

Fail on the bloody handbrake cable, will be sorted tomorrow and retested Thursday, more annoying when they fail for small things instead of big things!

I'm fairly at peace with it now just annoyed that I didn't spot it before it went, to be fair though I've had a lot newer cars fail a lot more spectacularly so I can't grumble

Bit of a fiddly job, but nothing major. These old buses are lasting well, it's in the years beyond the sixteenth or seventeenth when the quality of a car pays back. I run the same but in estate version as my daily, it's showing no signs of packing up, just a front caliper in the last 40k.

My car has its share of squeaks and rattles but it has its 22nd birthday in March and it starts first turn of the key every day as well as being 99% rust free! Shame newer volvo's aren't like this or I'd happily run them for life!

Nice looking Volvo and shame about the fail, hopefully easily sorted and you get your well-deserved pass? As has been said, it is easy to miss an obvious thing.

I spent a whole weekend getting my XC70’s handbrake to work properly prior to its recent MoT, and giving the car a really good clean too.... It then failed on a lower ball joint! However the tester did comment though, on how clean it was - but there seemed to be suspicion in his voice as he said it.. I think he must be used to twelve year-old cars being covered in grot.

Handbrake is going to be sorted then booked for a retest tomorrow so hopefully this minor fail is water under the bridge

Decent result! Is it definitely the cable? I had to fit new shoes on my 1997 v70 tdi for last mot as it was recording no handbrake effort on one side. The shoe had delaminated leaving the lining sitting loose in the drum...

The shoes were replaced last year so definitely the cable, was supposed to be being fixed today but gonna be tomorrow now
