I see someone's suggested an Ibiza - how about a Leon Cupra?

Not sure the budget will stretch to an R but the regular ones are in budget - 180bhp, they're parts-bin VAG-by-numbers so easy to fix, and I do think these will gain a following

I have a Golf GTi as a daily so wanted to avoid anything too similar - but cheers for the nod.

If you can get on with the looks then there's the BMW 325ti. Perhaps more of a mini-GT than a balls out the bath racer, but I adored mine. Sonorous, swift and slidey.
