I tend to rag the arse of my gsa shitroen and do quite a lot of long hard miles. I notice when its cold it sound lovely and quiet, after i have done a few miles it develops a more tappy sound. Presumably i need a thicker oil that doesnt thin too much as it heats? What oil/grade/brand should i buy? TIA. L

I would think a 20/50 would be orig spec. Halfords used to do their own brand Classic 20/50 but as it isn't any good for push bikes I expect it is no longer available.

Just checked and surprisingly its still on sale.

Valvoline mineral 20/50 Race oil proper zdp content holds racing etypes and rover v8 engines together even when showing 0 oil pressure at idle.

Fantastic stuff, also cuts oil consumption on the engines I've used it in.

I own a VW T2 where arguments about oil are legendary.

Thirty monograde vs 20W50 ad infinitum...

My local VW specialist has just oil changed me to 5W40?

It's a mineral oil and may be worth a try as an alternative to 20W50 which is a very old fashioned narrow band?

Fuck knows, I'm just an end user.

Most of the GS guys I know use 10w40 without issue. I use this also without issue. From memory it's one if the recommended grades in the GS handbook.

Important thing is to use a good quality filter brand such as Purflx. You can buy a spigot adaptor from Chevronics to allow fitting of the more modern BX/Xantia fitment Purlux filters as the GS specific ones are no longer available.

Cheapest place for Purflux filters is GSF when they have their money off weekends.
