Two extremes with non car people who have an old car. Considered either a load of old rubbish that needs scrapped even if it's mint or a sure fire valuable classic worth loads even if it's hanging.

Paradoxical innit, your non-car enthusiast has an oldish motor with a problem, gets Quote from local garage that comes to about as much as the car is worth (clutch supply and fit, new discs and pads and a MOT) and weighs it in. Then the exact same model is on Gumtree, a right shed that needs even more spending on it but it is a classic ennit mate so it's up for 3/4 of its value despite needing 5/4 of its value spending on it, but it will suit an enthusiast.

First car sounds ready for scrapyard. Clutch, brakes and test out. Easily £6-700 worth of work there at a garage. Just depends what the circumstances are at the time, there’s some cracking cars about for less than a grand. People do frequently overestimate how good their car is, perfect example is something like a Mondeo with a bollocksed clutch that I saw other week, 52 plate I think it was, the guy wanted £400 for it, which is what it was worth without a fucked clutch, so by rights that’s a £1000 car before you’ve found all the other shit that inevitably up with it.
