BMW 540i PAS/SLS Pump Help Wanted

Recommended Posts

I've been to see a 1993 540i in the pissing rain today with a horrible whining drone on the M60 4L engine. It has had the hydraulic self levelling taken off the rear suspension and replaced some time ago and now has the noise from cold, slowly subsiding as it warms. I gather the SLS was fed from the steer pump unit, is the noise because that part of the pump is now dry? Can I put a non SLS PAS pump in place? The steering is fine and doesn't alter the noise. Any pointers well appreciated!  Cheers.

Cheers for that, it confirms what I thought though not if a non self levelling suspension pump can now be fitted. Or if that is the noise or what was done to eliminate the SLS. There seems to be big difference in availability and price between the two pumps  I'm going to see it again so I'll do the proper thing, - buy it and wonder what to do with afterwards!

Im fairly sure this question was asked before by someone in the E34 community. Im quite confident that you'll be able to find your answers there with a bit of research. I don't see a reason why a normal power steering pump would not fit, make sure to check out realOEM, maybe it helps you (as it has been proven invaluable to me before):

Cheers for that  but I don't think it matters now I've seen the car in the dry, the sills are a bit crusty for me. Incidentally, the pump is $1002 +,core but discontinued anyway on BMW site. Thanks for the link, I have 2 other old BMWs so it's a useful tool anyway.
