There used to be a wonderful scrapyard in Salterforth near Barnoldswick in Lancs. IIRC it was used as Auntie Wainwright's yard in Last Of The Summer Wine. (Although I am probably wrong)

No idea if it still exists. But I hope it does. Spent many happy hours climbing over cars to retrieve parts back in the day.

I've just remembered a scrap yard experience I had. It was my first car, a mini clubman, hand painted blue. For some reason I wanted a new steering wheel, probably a smaller one for added sportiness as I was 18 at the time so late 80's. I remember waiting in the office while someone went and retrieved one for me. He brought it to me and it was awful, dirty and in terrible condition. I wasn't the most confident of people but I mumbled something about not wanting it. The office had about 4 blokes and an alsation dog in there so you get the picture. I was told in no uncertain terms by the dodgy looking owner of the place to kindly leave and not return. I didn't argue!

Still plenty yards like that around here, was just in 1 today.

 

Theres 2 ive visited in Paisley recently, both just let me wander around, 20quid for a mirror, dash vent and glovebox handle from 1, the other let me wander around helping myself to old tax disc holders, dealer stickers etc. and my pal and I went to another today and did the same, they had a lot of accident damage and insurance write off jobs in, very rude awakening when I discovered about 50% of the breakers in this yard today were newer than my car if not considerably newer.
