Bodging with Alabama Shrimp

Yeah, I was going to swap the throttle body on mine to a higher number one, but I don't think they are just plug and play!

Posted

I can't find a source for that at the mo. In the meantime this might help..(btw I believe the throttle body finis code is 1358592)

After cleaning the throttle body you should erase the KAM (keep alive memory) of the PCM. This can be done with a suitable diagnostic system or simply by disconnecting the battery for about half an hour.

During time the PCM is adapted to the engine condition. If the throttle body slowly gets dirty during time the PCM will compensate this. If the throttle body is cleaned the PCM will still use the parameters which are adapted to the dirty throttle body. Ebentually the PCM will adapt to the clean throttle body but this may take a relative long time.

After erasing the KAM memory the engine will run on a set of pre programmed parameters. After starting the engine the PCM will immediately start to adjust the parameters to the engine condition.

I took the battery off for about an hour, made no change when I reconnected and turned the car on.

Maybe you have to do both? Or do I just start the car and leave it running at idle for a bit? I can't drive it as it's a twat to stop.

Decided on another throttle body off ebay. A seller is always breaking STs (be he's killed loads) and as the one he had seldom this morning... I've contacted him and he's got another (not as good) but thinks over revving could be the breather pipe on the back of the inlet.

Apparently you need a torch and a mirror to see if it's collapsed. Tiny engine bay so I'm sure it'll be fun :-)

Quick answer is no.

Long answer is you can't see shit it's so small so it's booked in for Friday so the experts can have a look...

Might get them to do the back engine mount too as it's split.

Posted

Took the ST to the main dealers this morning. I didn't drive but followed. Drove like a sack and had three EAC fails on the way leaving the engine management light on.

They're a good garage we took it to but very non committal when it came to if they could fix it.

Frontera has 14 days test left and about a 3 inch hole in the back box. Went to a place that's welded an exhaust for me before to be told they're welder had broken.

No worries down the road is the exhaust supplier. Yeah they can get a back box but it's £70odd. Sod that they're about £50 on eBay and you get more bits.

Went across town to a place that's also done a small bit of welding before and he was really good. Said no worries whatever it was he can fix it. 'bring it back with its fail and I'll do it straight away or even book it in next door'. Then regaled me with a story of a Luguna mk3 that had been in a garden for a year, it drove with shit brakes and how he only failed it on a bulb.

Sounds like the garage for me! Only £30 an hour for welding too.

I know what you mean about the back box, but I paid up £85 for the place round the corner to do mine on the Fusion. I couldn't be asked to faff around with that, and it was done in 45 mins.

Ford dealers have rung. It does have a split intake breather pipe and replacing it should* fix the problems.

£40 for a new one. Fitting no idea, an hour or two max. They've never done one before so not sure. Cost maximum £200.

I'd say no and do it myself but the inlet manifold is plastic and half of its buried being the plastic slam panel. I don't want to take half the front of the car off. Mrs Shrimp would not be happy as it'd take me ages and she wants to take it on holiday next week. Better to pay...

Sounds positive, I'm trying to work out which pipe it is....none of these?

Sadly none of them it's one on the back of the inlet manifold.

Where did you get that picture though? I must be really crap at searching as I could find next to sod all.

Edit: that's not the air filter housing on the Mk6 ST.

Very useful site (why couldn't I find it??) anyway I think it'll be part 6853 looked like it's got a plastic plug on one end.

If it is then it's near impossible to get to. Still not my problem now but will definitely be ordering a spare.

Posted

I couldn't find that part on eBay, maybe start with fordpartsuk.com, but as their postage is ridiculous, you may be better getting a spare straight from the dealer.

Posted

No neither can I... The guy that breaks them has some. It's taken about 10 year to fail so I think I'll just get one or two spare from him just in case.

Posted

I notice the breather pipe in both pics is 6853 yet totally different. And we wonder why the wrong parts get ordered for cars...

A split pipe there would make sense, it'd cause a massive air leak after the throttle body.

Posted

Might be worth getting that little crankcase filter changed as well if it hasn't been done. 6a631 above...

Posted

6A631 small sprung filter has turned to mush. I left what was left of it in, but the guy in the garage says it does sod all and they normally don't replace them.

Posted

Fair enough, Sierraman said that it's just there to stop oil getting on to the air filter, but mine was mush too, and didn't seem a big problem.

But I replaced it, because I'm a bit obsessive lol.

Just been rung by the Ford dealers. Breather hose changed and car working all ok!

Bloke says the guy from ebay knowing about the pipe splitting has saved tons of work. Took an hour so £118 total.

Going to pick it up soon. Will have to see if it's back 100%.

ST picked up, all back to normal.

They saved the damaged hose

Sodding thing isn't even the bit I was looking for. Only about 6 inch long and not shown on those pictures above...

Part number 4m5g-6758-ha. Can find very little about it. Still got another coming just in case.

Good work Shrimpy, sounds like a result. Would have been interesting to see how the Ford dealers diagnosed it if they hadn’t had a tip-off from a random eBay seller! I would bet a few groat they would plug it into their machine, get a ‘diagnosis’ that made no sense at all, then start randomly changing stuff at your expense.

Thanks! The ebay guy has definitely saved a lot of messing about. You're right about the dealers, they had plugged it in last week with no related fault showing and must have mentioned it about 10 times.

Still they didn't argue when I told them what I thought it was and were very happy when I came for it. Last week they said it could be £200, would have been very easy to over charge.

Part random number in the seldom updated but ongoing saga of crappy cars I own.

January 1st was fun as the ST decided it no longer wanted its nsf spring just as it was being taken to work. Made a very lovely bang and stopped in the middle of the road just outside the house.

With scrapping sounds abound it was moved to the side of the road damage unknown as it was dark and I could only just get my hand in.

Next day it was taken the the main dealers, by the AA via Ford assist, who said there was exactly sod all extra damage and they supplied both front springs (thought it best to get both) for about £200ish.

Its making a wired click now when you turn to the right. It's been back and they can't find anything. It went somewhere else for the power fluid changed and they said it was dirty and possibly has a tiny hole in the system but you can't see anything. So it keep an eye on a colour change and go from there.

It also had new brakes at the back but the knob adjusted them wrong and now the handbrake is sky high.

As has been documented in another thread last week the Mk2 Fiesta wouldn't start when I was in a car park in town.

Retightening the nuts on the battery to super tight made it start just as the recovery truck turned up. It's started every time since then.

Today though it's not been raining so I finally managed a whole 15 minutes to mess with it.

So following advice each contact was taken off and given a rub down.

Did the lead as well and both got a light coating of vasaline.

Two random washers were found in the street and I tightened it so much that the spring washer flattened out

Both sides done and it started first time

Will this fix it? Who knows but better than nothing.
