Triumph Herald 1200 clutch in top* working condition

not had to work on a clutch before (although I did adjust the clutch cable on the 2cv) so in need of advice

 

following issues:

 

- bite point is very high, in the last inch or two or travel

- when in neutral, letting the clutch out makes a grinding noise

- it might be my imagination but I think it was slipping in 4th going up a steep hill

 

I think it's a hydraulic clutch, so maybe not as easy as adjusting a cable - is this a total overhaul job or is there something I can do to bodge it for the next thousand miles or so (i've only just registered it so want some fun first!)

Grinding noise not caused by adjustment. Something is fucked......possibly the release bearing. Better take it out and have a look.

 

For a first clutch job at least you've picked a good one.....

Have a hard life herald clutches.

People insist on full lock when pulling out of a parking space.

When the box is off try pushing and pulling the flywheel backwards and forwards.

Crank thrust bearings can wear.

What year/engine Herald is it? If its an early one it could have a coil spring clutch rather than the later more common diaphragm type. You'd need to make sure you get the right parts and also that the slave cylinder is the right type for the clutch.

 

You shouldn't need to disturb the hydraulics to change the clutch. The slave cylinder can be taken off the bellhousing with the clamp and the pipe carefully bent so it is out of the way.

 

Its all pretty simple nuts and bolts stuff, as with most things on a Herald and if its the standard non-overdrive gearbox its not even that heavy.  Best to get the passenger seat out of the way first as it makes access a bit easier. We got the whole job down to under an hour and a half with a bit of practice.
