So what came first, the 404 or the Ox-Cam? They are remarkably similarly Pininfarina styled cars.

Fiat 1800 as well... Pinin was a master of re-selling the same design over and over again.

Add the Lancia Flaminia to the mix, which started life as the Lancia Florida concept car in 1957,

after Farina had unsuccessfully tried to sell the design to BMW for a 502 replacement, in 1956.

You can read up on it in the BMW chronicle "Das weiß-blaue Wunder" by Hanns-Peter Rosellen.

The Florida must be considered the gamete of the ca. 1960 'Farina Saloon' epidemic.

It even has the BMW 502's door arrangement:

The 404 was the original A60 design, but BMC thought it was too European looking, so Pininfarina offered a less attractive, frumpier version and sold the first design to Peugeot. I think we can be thankful that the far more attractive 404 was given the engineering it deserved so went as well as it looked, while the A60s frumpiness was perfectly suited to the DULL underpinnings
