Junior Jag- how Wank are X types?

I'd be looking at something ten years old and relying on it having another two or three years of life left in it, so I couldn't quite be comfortable with that approach.

 

But I take your point. The one with FSH and bills for ATF changes is the one to go for (manuals are very rare).

True I haven't driven a Lincoln, but I've driven the original and facelifted S-types and they were very very different.

 

As a former jag licker I read up quite a bit about the front and rear suspension changes - they weren't minor.  

 

As described above, the initial release of the S-Type seemed to be "take this platform" (the Lincoln)  and the facelifted version was Jag wresting back some Jaginess - the ride and handling are very different, and the interior is much more Jag (of that period) - so I refute the allegation of pub horseshit in this case. 

 

For what it's worth, they were both nice motors in my book - but I like yank cars, and would probably enjoy the Lincoln too.

Had an s type and have a cheap diesel x type now as a daily. Both have been fine so far but I moved the Skype on after my mechanic noticed the lack of metal under the sill covers. The x type does not feel like a jag but the leather interior is a nice place to be. The s type was more future classic material I guess but the Rover 75s I have owned felt like more honest examples of their marque.

We have an xj8 and have owned xj6 in the past, if you want a true jag experience I suggest this is the route to go down and get something economical for the commute - an mgf works for me.

I cant pass comment on the X, But ive driven a mates V8 S-type it was either the naturally aspirated 4.0 or the 4.2.

 

Even though it was fast as fuck and drove superbly it just felt a bit clinical i dunno if it was just well soundproofed or maybe the feedback from the steering wasnt great.

 

He paid 2200 for it which seemed steep, Then the gearbox shat its self and he got forced to scrap it by SWMBO

 

Every X-type i poke about under in the scrapyard looks fucked though, But its one of those cars that should it appear for 500 quid with decent test why not have a punt.

It was more that bar room experts can judge what a car will be like if the floorpan is the same, no matter what else is done to it.  The VW Corrado shared its platform and suspension with the Passat but they don't drive the same at all.

 

Agree that the facelift S Type is the one to have, as told to me by a friend who works at Jaguar and did some of the testing back then.

 

Back to X Types, they sold loads so at least there's lots to chose from, but it seems you've got to check for rust like it's a Ford Ka.
