Water leak Mystery and removing foam from airbox on my Z3

Yesterday I decided to start up the Z3 after changing the radiator expansion tank and I noticed it was still leaking so I decided to reinstall the expansion tank again and fingers crossed it seems to be holding up again for now anyway..

The thing is to check the leak I had to take the airbox off and when I looked inside the foam had started crumbling so I thought it might be better to remove the stuff and clean the box out.

I just wondered is there any reason why the foam is in the airbox in the first place and will it do any damage running without it in the box.

I'm viewing this on my phone so the picture isn't very clear. If the foam isn't connected with the pcv it will probably just be there for sound deadening, in which case I'd take it out if it's starting to crumble

Cheers rain again the stuff is not glued in and I've just been on the Bmw forums and apparently I've just done a mod on the car for better performance without even realising it.

So I must be coming over all max power or something next it will be fitting 22 inch wheels and ram raiding halfords lol.

If I cant get on with it then if just found some fresh foam which will do the job nicely if I cut it to the the right size.

I've still got to get to the cause of the water leak as it now doesn't leak from the expansion tank but I think the culprit is a big washer which sits underneath the expansion tank..post-9282-0-16376900-1465491291_thumb.png

I've booked my car in to the local garage on Tuesday who are absolutely fantastic so hopefully I will get to drive it now next month.

At this rate it will be winter before I start using it lol.
