vw / audi 1Z 1.9 tdi woes... (fixed for now)

much as I hate to give up on a car I've had it with my old audi 80 tdi unless anyone can help me with a quick fix

brief history:

1. Ran well for a few years slight weeps from the fuel pump using dino diesel but using bio sealed these up..

2. About a year ago massive leak from IP driveshaft seal - pissing diesel all over the cam belt etc..

3. Left it on the drive for a few months over the winter then took the belts and pump off over several weeks

4. Got the pump resealed but was told the voltages were 'all over the place' but I let them go ahead with a reseal as it'd been ok before with no nasty shudder at idle or other weirdness than these tdi pumps can do...

5. Gained much experience building it all back up - so 'german' and pernickety compared to french diesels I thought..

6. Wouldn't run at all until I adjusted the injected quantity on the fuel pump a little...

7. Started and idled ok - but strong smell off unburnt fuel and wisps of white smoke...

8. Double and triple checked cam / pump timing and still the same - have all the locking tools and VCDS software too..

9. Sudden big oil leak from the oil pressure switch turns oil light on...engine gets a bit 'clanky'

10. Fixed the leak and topped up / starts and idles fine - very clanky / tappety when revved and lots of white smoke...

11. left it here - should probably do a compression test now - but lost heart...

have you tried swopping over the 1 electronic pulse injector?? It can throw up lot of running problems, when it starts to fail...

I have a totally rebuilt with new pistons, rings/honed/cam etc 1Z in my engine collection; after a total rebuild, it had the same would start on the key, 3 days outta 5 n on its down days refused to 'catch' - hundreds were spent on the engine, but in even after the rebuild the same problem persisted - the chap, just bought an entire mk3 golf n took its ecu n engine to fit to his own, n I got all he was disposing of out of the original car for free... I gave the new electronic injector that came with the engine to a mate who had all sorts of running probs with his aldi 80 1z, n it sorted that out for him... tho he did sell the car 2 weeks later....

Was it running on veg oil previous to the seal going ?

I've seen veg ruin several pumps by gumming the internals up when it's parked up for ages

No, we ran it on well made B100 - the place that resealed it, apparently ran it on their test bench and said that the mechanical part of the pump was fine, but the electrical top part, the Quantity Adjuster failed their tests..

I'd sack it off. Diesels can run to some big mileages but once you start getting trouble with the pump or injection equipment they are rarely worth putting right financially.

mmm. looks like I fixed this -

Pain the butt these ecu controlled pumps - and this is from 1993 - hate to think the hassle when more modern diesels get to this age!

The actuator on top tends to wear and do odd things over time, the thin fingers wipe over the surface and this is what wears I think and confuses the ECU - can't get them new anymore and they don't look like they can be fixed - but I managed to get a spare pump on eBay and the actuator seems to work well - no more error codes yet but you need to set the position of the actuator very accurately with VCDS to get the Injected Quantity correct...

No more white smoke either - got it all really up to temp and I think one of the hydraulic lifters seems to have fixed itself....

Some have run these with non-electronic pumps as the Discoveries and Montegos did without too much loss of performance. Well-repaired, though.

oh, yes do you mean mTDI?  I did read about this but it looked a lot more work and my fix seems to have worked and been the cheapest...

The later slightly later TDI pumps used a slightly different design that doesn't wear in the same way but still goes weird over time - on this Audi they'll throw pump error codes and the throttle will stop working when you let your foot off it.. it'll then start working again when you drop the clutch! The idle can get all screwy and rough too....

loads of early ecu controlled diesel use pumps with this actuator on top - A4's, BMW E34s, 850 tdi's, etc, etc,
