Cheap 4x4 anyone?

Just been offered this Hilux Surf cheap by my neighbour. He runs an engineering place and it belongs to one of his customers. Story is the customer bought it a year ago for £2900 and it developed an erratic idle. It's been compression tested and came back okay so it's probably an injector or pump problem, however once off idle it apparently runs fine and drives okay. There's no sign of any head gasket issues either. It's a 2.5 turbo diesel and auto. The fella took it to my neighbours work to fit a new pump but the pump he bought turned out to be the wrong one so he sent it back and the company have done a dissapearing act with his £300 and the pump. Having spent out on having it poked and prodded, compression tested and the pump, he's now out of pocket about a grand and is fed up with it and wants rid.

It's got pretty tidy bodywork and looks solid underneath, has nice wheels and good tyres. Interior is tidy and it's well equipped with stuff like switchable suspension, a/c etc. it's got an immobiliser too. He's looking for £250 which seems like a mega bargain to me and if I didn't already have my truck I'd be tempted. It'd be worth that just to go offroading in the bugger and i expect if i had the cash floating about that's most likely what I'd be doing!

Ooh, I could be interested in this, I have a peg leg at the moment so need an auto.. Do you have any more info on the idle problem. Will it idle at all? Or is it just lumpy?

Apparently it will idle, it's just lumpy like it's not firing on all four but it only does it at idle.. off idle it smooths out. I can take a battery round there and fire it up if your interested. I couldn't do it when I looked at it before because the battery was dead.

Vibration is causing throttle position sensor to 'unread'?It's usually a sticking valve in the idle control valve.

Put all the pulleys and belts that had been taken off back on, fired it up and drove it back to Eds this afternoon. The dodgy idle is more than live able with, and all it looks to need for a test are 1 rear wheel stud and the downpipe to centre pipe exhaust flexi. GR8 4 draggin other tat!
