Today we are winning.

Thanks once again to Mr Wobbler for sending the box of Prelude spares. Swapped over the distributor keeping only the original cap (which looked in bettr nick), retimed the ignition and all good - in fact seems to be running smoother (in my imagination I'm sure).

I noticed the other day that the power steering fluid was very low, and today the pump started making ominous howling banshee noises while I was under the bonnet. Half a bottle of Halfrauds' finest pink stuff had it running perfectly again. No doubt a leak somewhere in the system to try to track down.

I think that Honda's have to have a special power steering fluid. Normal stuff ruins the seals and probably what causes the leak

Someone told me that on here when i changed out the civic PS fluid.

You're right, and I had heard the same. But the chances of it having had Honda fluid in it for the last ten years is fairly minimal. At some point I'll buy the Honda snake oil and do a complete change - but I'll fix any leaks first.
