BMX bikes

I missed out on the whole BMX pheonomenon, mainly due to the fact my folks felt my dads fold up 3 speeder uni-sex raleigh triumph was more than adequate for my early teenage travelling needs.

 

However, this BMX listing on ebay made me chuckle.

back in the mid eighties I had a secondhand Raleigh Grifter which I absolutely loved (can't see many kids these days being satisfied with a used bike) however the thing weighed a tonne and the crap sturmey-archer three speed gears snapped on a weekley basis-true bike shite?

 

Once I was looking behind me (as you do when cycling) and came so close to going over the bonnet of a Ford Capri pulling out of a courtyard.

I wanted a BMX, and then a Chopper but I had to settle for a secondhand Strika which was a complete pile of shite that I fell off 8000000 times. I put a different chainring on it in a vain attempt to increase its top speed but finally killed it when I rode too close to a protruding garden wall, caught one of the pedals and just about ripped the crank out of the bottom bracket.

 

 

Probably worth several hundred pounds on evilbay now

Grifters were great bikes, my mate had one and I was very envious. BMX's didn't really interest me, simply due to the fact I always thought bikes were about gears and not stunts and falling off. Prior to my dads 'triumph' I had a Tomahawk, a gearless puny version of the Chopper. I suppose if I had the up to date cool kid bikes when they were in vogue, I dare say today I would be wanting a new Golf GTi or something - everything happens for a reason.

True but then if you were bought up-to-date new then you were probably from a slightly well-off family and would grow up to be an arsehole working in Finance with a friend called Toby and therefore be 'conditioned' to be only satisfied with new and expensive trinkets??? or am I talking shit because the strong painkillers I've taken are kicking in?I'm not saying everybody who had a new bike grew up to be an arsehole I have no scientific data to back-up such a claim.

I had a Raleigh Boxer in yellow like this one:

 

 

Got it for christmas when I was about 7 or 8 and I must have ridden it EVERY day for the next few years, it was such an ace bike. We had quite a bit of waste land near us before they built on it and we used to go scrambling on our bikes. Most of my mates had a Boxer, Striker or Grifter - never really got into BMXs. Everybody used to do the motorbike sound by turning up the front mudflap so it rubbed on the tyres. Breadloaf tags on the brake cables too. Happy days *sigh*

 

shite meisters story reminds me that I ran into the back of an HB Viva owned by the old guy round the corner because I had my head down pedalling really fast! It was in really nice condition but luckily I didn't damage it and rode off sharpish! Hit and run!!

 

My next bike was a "proper" one, a Raleigh Spider. I remember seeing about 20 of them lined up in the department store all shiny and new.

Oh the memories are flooding back - remember the yellow and black sirens with three settings you could get too? They were brilliant.
