Urko Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 A very kind soul lent me the proper tools to change the belts on my KV6. Everything's been going well, but I can't get the tool that locks the rear sprockets to stay in place while I tighten the bolt on the exhaust cam. The locking tool just keeps slipping out of the keyway on the exhaust cam as I apply any pressure to tighten the bolt. I have tried (multiple) heavy duty cable ties and a heath robinson nut/bolt clamp to try and hold it in place, but nothing seems to work - anyone done this and have any ideas?
EssDeeWon Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 This is all I can find after a quick Google, but I would recommend you popping into the 75/ZT forum because some of the guys on there are very knowledgeable on these things. I paid to have mine done so I know nothing! http://forums.xpowerforums.com/showthread.php?t=60892 purplebargeken 1
Urko Posted February 14, 2016 Author Posted February 14, 2016 Ok thanks all - I didn't really explain very well. I am OK with the actual job courtesy of t'internet and Haynes, in fact it's nearly done. What I need is a bit of autoshite lateral thinking about how to hold the locking tool in place while I do the final 90 degree tightening - the pics may give an idea - the efforts I made haven't worked so far, the locking tool always jumps out.

Urko Posted February 14, 2016 Author Posted February 14, 2016 Thanks chompy - that is indeed the problem. Lots of beards counsel against holding it at the other end claiming it does the cam no good (tales of disintegrated camshaft ends a few hundred miles later) also I don't have anyone handy, or I'd ask 'em to hold the locking tool in place. I do appreciate the thought though. I should never have broken up with my German girlfriend who used to help with this stuff (and who once mended my central heating) Lacquer Peel 1
Des Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 If ever there was a job for a rattle gun. Urko 1
Urko Posted February 15, 2016 Author Posted February 15, 2016 I have an air rattle gun - but I thought it was a bit brutal for this - a bit wary of trying to use it with the dial guage but maybe I am being a wuss. The bolt is torqued up to spec, I just need to turn it a further 90 degrees whilst keeping both pulleys still.
Urko Posted February 20, 2016 Author Posted February 20, 2016 Done with the air rattle gun in about ten seconds - a million thanks to Des.
