SORN/Tax Question?

OK basic jist is sisters car came off the road approx 3 years ago when she lost her licence for medical reasons, was put on sorn at that point, and has been ever since, sister later passed away (September 2014) and to be honest we never changed the registered keeper on the V5 with the DVLA so still registered in her name.

 

Last week we found the V5, put my dads details on section 6, the part about changing the registered keeper, a look on the gov.UK website advised us to send the V5 plus a covering letter explaining the death of the registered keeper to their "sensitive casework team" which we've done.

 

My question is this, do we need to re-sorn the car now that theres been a change of keeper or does the car remain on sorn regardless until we take it off?

 

Secondly do we need to take it off sorn to tax it? Or does taxing it automatically do this? According to the website it could take 4 weeks to get the V5 back but we have the new keeper supplement which means we can tax the car as a new keeper would ordinarily do if you sold them your car.

Yes, after any change of keeper, it needs to be re-SORN'd, if you plan keeping it off road and not using it.  I just go back to the website until it lets me do the re-SORNing.  

 

You could tax it immediately.  Taxing does take it off SORN automatically.  

 

I wonder if SORN will go into the dictionary?  I SORN, you SORN, he SORNs...............

You're supposed to re-declare SORN when there's a change of keeper. My experience is they don't rush into any kind of enforcement if you don't, but will send you a reminder after a while. The V5 should come back first.

 

Taxing it automatically cancels the SORN.
