Starter Motor Woez

Got round to wiring up the Astra after putting the engine in.

There's a lot of things happening which shouldn't (engine battery light goes brighter and brighter when you put the wipers through different speeds - with the key out   etc )

 

The first thing I'd love to sort out is the starter motor. Battery is brand new. When you turn the key, you get an electrical drone sound, like something is engaging or powering up, it's constant. No clicking, just a BRBRBRBRBRBR.

 

What could this be, before I have to lacerate my arm skin and take it out.

Check all the earth connections first. Take a jump lead from the battery neg to a good engine earth point, bell housing etc to see if improves

yeah, sounds like the engine isn't earthed. Watch out for hot throttle/clutch cables....

Yep, forgot to connect the earth from the gearbox to the body. Starter span fine with it connected! But slowly because ...

 

With everything switched off, the alternator is very warm and battery light is on. Removed alt, everything OK.

I take it this is the regulator shorting out? My only working battery (out of 10 dead ones) drained. Borrocks!
