2001 Woever or Rover 75

That's awesome. What did Andy say about the durability of the replacement housing?

Posted

I think if it is looked upon as a service item then you shouldn't go too far wrong I guess. He didn't comment specifically but the housing was a proper Rover part so should be decent enough to last a few years.

He was very methodical and I guess it was pretty straightforward upon reflection but it helps if you have done it before (which he had). Some of the rear bolts for the manifold were fiddly to get to and with hindsight I should have taken the opportunity to replace the rear plugs. Maybe next time when I get the belts done.

I feel a lot happier now though.

The 75 has its quirks but the forum is a good one and the folk I have come across have been ace, especially Andy who did it as a favour/hobby/helping hand.

Great News Ken, once you start driving the 75 and build up some confidence in the car you'll be hooked, as I am now. Of course that is your fault for selling me one  8)

Is yours the same colour as mine, Ken?

Hopefully driving it will commence over the weekend.

That's right, blame me tsk :)

I think it is, I will check the paint code tomorrow :)

I had stuffed some kitchen roll into the recess where the thermostat housing sits in order to soak up the spilt coolant (did that yesterday). I just pulled it all out with the flexible grabber thing today and I have a nice clean and dry bit of engine. Coolant level checked and all is good, car brought up to temp and happily sat there at 96 degrees, fan working, both top and bottom hoses hot, temp gauge rock steady at halfway. No coolant leaks. Phew.

I have some buying of bits! Some new clips for the tread plates on the sills. An actual spare alloy wheel and decent tyre.

Buying frenzy!!!!!!!

...temp gauge rock steady at halfway...

Don't forget though, that the "temperature gauge" is a 50-90-130°C indicator, not a true temperature gauge.  I'd never heard of such a thing; had me fooled for years.

The needle sits at that comforting point just under half-way which means in practice only that the engine temperature is somwhere within its normal operating range, which could be anything between 60°C and 120°C, I gather.  So by the time the gauge tells you something is wrong, it's too late.

I know you're on top of this, but a dashboard gauge that lies to me is an irritant.  I know that the car knows the true temperature, because if you press the trip button a certain number of times whilst simultaneously crossing your legs and singing Smoke on the Water, you can get the actual temperature on the dashboard.

Which means it is theoretically possible to access this info, convert digital-to-analog, buffer with a couple of transistors to get a current reading, and apply that directly to the meter movement after its electronics have been ripped out.  One day, I want to do just this.

Yeah the dash temp indicator is a 'well it's kind of' type thing and you are quite right that the trip button pressing one gives an actual indication (this is the one I go by :)

I'm going for a trip in the car on Sunday, so that should tell me if the problem persists. All indications at present say that it should be ok :)

I have made the sacrificial offering to the Rover Gods (the old thermostat housing was burned at the stake)

Ken, you know how to monitor the actual coolant temperature using the on dash trip computer? These KV6's generally run at 92-97*c which is fine.

I tend to leave the coolant temp tool on when im using the car around town, it sits at 93-96 without the aid of a lower speed fan

Edit* I just read your last post again, you do know about the trip tempreture 8)

Am Fuggin Expert at using it now Stephen

Good work PBK. These 75's do seem to require a bit of effort to own but they are such a lovely steer I think they're worth the bother. Saw a MINT ZT V8 in my works car park today, looked like a brand spanker. Could have pulled up my deck chair and just sat staring at it all afternoon.

The 75 will get its shakedown run this evening. Time hasn't been on my side recently. I am hoping that all will be well.

Any further evidence of overheating would most likely indicate that HGF is the problem. If that is the case then the car will not be viable from a cost perspective and will get parted.

I am hoping that all will be well however :)

Arrghh, had to take Mrs, PBK to the urgent car walk in centre, try again tomorrow.

Finaly got the Rover onto the openish road. Took a drive over to Turnford to see my MG ZTT owning mate. The Rover didital temp showed between 97 to 101 degrees in varying road conditions, AC (which is nice and cold) on and off and spirited driving when able to do so. Cruise control works happily too.

I showed a clean pair of heels to a large bike and a newish BMW away from some lights too, they were blipping at the lights so I thought I would play. Utterly left 'em for dead and that was in economy mode. Sports mode would have been even more fun. I iz child.

I will check the coolant levels in the morning. Checked the temp with the guy who did the work and he said that that was spot on.

I haz happy :)
