I was surprised when i read the recent project on the Jaguar x type, theyd spent nigh on 4 grand doing up a 54 plate example, it sounded madness when the finished article cant have been worth £1500. Judging by what was uo with it they would have been as well chucking it and getting another

 

The whole idea with project cars is to get one that needs loads of work and publish articles about fixing it - if it didn't need any work, there's be nothing to write about. Most 54 plate X Types are skanky old sheds anyway.

I used to buy car-mechanics every month, but as such mags are imported here; I stopped buying it when it hit €7 or whatever... I remember a featured mk3 Granada estate 'project' bought for £150 or whatever; category C, by Simpson, and he rang around the scrapyards looking for panels the same colour, n the breaker charged him 'handsomely for a bonnet and wing (I think) n a headlamp - the headlamps were 'out of skew' alignment wise due to the minor 'tip' damage, n like a legend he packed out the mounts with a few washers - like a top Shitter!! ... he had to get it inspected afterwards as it was a catC...

 

there was also the ex-service man £10 Montego, bought at auction, n after £7 worth of fixes, or whatever it passed its Mot...

 

...there were also 'project cars like the Subaru estate that they fettled, but presumably these were owned by the Magazine itself, n when done it had a full feature ad in the back of the mag at about 4 times its UK market price... I always remember thinking - who TF who isn't on psychotropic drugs, is goin to buy that....

 

I still have about 40 copies of the mag in a box at home here... used to take me all of 20 mins to read them cover to cover...
