A spot of rust.

Decided to do something about the half inch hole in the sill of me old Range Rover the other day.

Wasn't quite prepared for this though:

Out comes the trusty Hadrians panels book/mig scenario.

Shitting hell, out would come the familiar weighbridge/ebay scenario if I uncovered that lot on my daily.

damn wen to look at a 800e MGB today with collapsed suspension, underneigth looked the same rusty as sin, so you planning on repairing it.. or time for new..

It's gotta be repaired. The poor old clunkers become a member of the family. (Besides which I've just blown 150 quid on a steering box for it so I could actually get it in the garage!) I did the other side a few years ago but it was slightly better than this. It'll keep me out of trouble for a few weeks I suppose. What a superb way to avoid the festive season. 8)

AHA! All the grot spots. In one hit. If it makes you feel better, we have bought rangies in the past with much worse than that, with full MoT....

yeah amazes me how quick chassis rails can go to ruin on a car with MOT, i thought these things took years but according to our trusty MOT cert its seems not..i remember in the 90's when all i had to do was called a freind, give him the plate, chassis number and the MOt was there afew hours later  seems these days of old aint as far behind us as we thought

Yeah, but we bought one which had ropey chassis rails, and pretty much no floors (certainly none at all in the boot), strangely the vendors name was the same as that on the MoT cert....

now that really doesnt surprise me they always says a mechanics cars the worse on the road...

Now have a look at the rear body crossmember, and the rear floor stiffeners (from below).

Are you sure you want to repair all that?!

Posted

Yup. Rear crossmember has dissolved too. It's grand.

My thinking is that if I bin this and replace it with another Rangey then that will be just as bad sooner rather than later. In for a penny in for a pound and all that.

Tailgate's good though. And the window rubbers are apparently rust free.

Other side was just as bad about three years ago...

...and that was simple enough to sort, even though it took me months of hard labour.

And the window rubbers are apparently rust free.

Wow nice handiwork. I am a bit of a welding perv, I love to see neat welding repairs on old cars, much like Reg likes to see a nice smiley rear cluster in fact.
