...done a clutch on a Legacy? I have this horrible feeling that they're a complete arse to do and it's going to cost me more than the car's worth to get it repaired - can anyone confirm or refute this?

Not done a Legacy, only an Impreza, pulled the engine, which actually wasn't that bad to do.

I believe it's quite easy to take the engine out, and you don't even have to drain the coolant.
