gordonbennet Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 Well remembered ProgRocker, i'd forgotten the names of the other two models at launch. Nexia was nothing short of horrid and they did a Belmont style booted version which felt better than the ugly dumpy hatch, Espero was sprt of OK'ish but felt like it was Nexia mechanicals in a frock penned by the designer of Xantia. Leganza was a completely different car, just felt right from the moment you got in, Camry like...wouldn't be surprised if they were trying to emulate Camry with it. Talking of Matiz, did you know they come with a proper torque converter auto box if optioned, sounds bonkers but for a town car its a little peach, the box is a gem. Spiny Norman and ProgRocker 2
brickwall Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 Box seems OK, it's a ZF 4 speed apparently. It's got quite a smart step-off from rest, which caught me out the first couple of times.... Cool. Good old Zf.

I can well imagine a Camry from the same era would feel quite similar, although I suspect the Toyota engine would be a bit sweeter. The lump in this is strong enough although ultimately its efforts are defeated by the near E class weight of the thing, but it's a gruff old Hector. Cool. Good old Zf. Same box as used in a load of PSA chod like the 306/405/Xantia & Volvo 400s.
