Car Clubs Visit to the Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway - Saturday July 12th 2014

My wife organized a wonderful day out for the Citroen car club last year at the Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway where she is a volunteer, this year she has thrown it open to car clubs and classic car owners and you are invited to join this special event.

Bring your favourite car along on Saturday July 12th for a very special event, when Car Club guests will have exclusive access to the railway for a whole afternoon of fun!

Starting off with a freshly prepared light lunch in the railway's dining cars, we'll take a trip down the line to Horsenden Lane in W55023, a 1960 heritage 'bubble car' with twin AEC engines and an all round view of the countryside.

On our return, there will be a walking tour of the railway yard and the opportunity to get 'up close and personal' with steam, diesel and electric rolling stock, both in service and under restoration. You will be able to climb inside locomotive cabs and perhaps even walk through the engine bay of Class 31163, a mainline diesel locomotive!

For those who have always wanted to have a go at driving a locomotive, the 1953 diesel shunter 'Haversham' (13018/D3018/08011) will be on hand to offer 'Driver for a Fiver' driving turns up and down the platform, between the home signals. £5 in the donation bucket will get you a great 'thrash' up and down the platform, supervised by the C&PRR's friendly traincrew.

The fully operational Chinnor Signal Box will be open to take a look around and those feeling strong can have a go at pulling the levers!

The Tea Room will remain open for light refreshments and also the Station Shop, offering gifts for adults and children alike, a wide selection of transport books and Bachmann model trains.

The railway car park will then provide plenty of space to park up our cars for individual and group photographs, to record the occasion, before we close the day and head home.

The Railway has facilities for the less able-bodied and the station platform, WC, dining coaches, W55023 'bubble car' and lower part of the railway yard are all accessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Cost

Cost per Adult / Senior - £12.50, inclusive of lunch, train trip, yard tour and signal box visit.

Cost per Junior (up to 16) - £7.50, as above

'Driver for a fiver' of 'Haversham' - £5 in the donation bucket per drive

Payment can be made by cash or credit card at Chinnor station, on the day.

Itinerary

Our anticipated itinerary is as follows - subject to final confirmation with the C&PRR. The walk-through of 31163's engine bay assumes that the locomotive is still on site, as it is due to depart for repairs to the air-brake system, in the near future.

11.00h - Arrival of Car Club guests

12.00h - Lunch (fresh sandwiches or hot pie, home-made cake, crisps, drinks) in the railway's dining coaches, in the platform

13.30h - W55023 trip down the line to Horsenden and back

14.30h - Tour of the yard, walk through 31163's engine room

16.00h - 'Driver for a Fiver' drives of 'Haversham' in the platform, Signal Box tours, Tea Room and Station Shop open

17.30h - Group photo opportunity in Railway car park

18.00h - Close & departure of Car Club guests

Answers to questions I have been asked elsewhere:

  1. You are welcome as a group or individually.
  2. You can pay for tickets in advance (or on the day) by contacting Claire.
  3. “Driver for a Fiver†is nothing to do with the car you drive, but a chance to drive a 50 ton diesel electric locomotive up and down the track for a short distance. This is not a raffle - if you pay you can drive.

I didn't even know there was a railway there, one for the future methinks

My daughter likes that railway because the corridor/compartment carriages are to her eyes like the ones on the Hogwarts Express (to my eyes like the carriages I knew as a child).

A splendid notion! The open signal box will be well worth a visit. Unfortunately I live too far away.

I live four miles from the station.  It' s v jolly - all got up as a Great Western Branch Line circa late 1950s.

One can gain access to the track from Swmbos aunt or grand garden, its a lovely walk (when the train isn't running)

The fucking pikeys burnt a carriage out the other year, we all put a few quid into the tin when it went into the co-op.

We might pop along if nothing else crops up. Can bring the ZX, or the XM if I still have it and plod aren't going to be there!
