Automatic gearbox oil alchemy TORRY CANION

Successfuly changed a BMW 4 speed automatic gearbox today, in the garage with a tolley jack.

So, this fucker takes 6.5 litres of ATF. Drain the sump before removal - fuck me, that's a lot of oil. Undo cooler pipes and let 'em drain - more and more and MOAR oil. But as the box comes off, the flood gates open. Jesus, give me a 5 litre washing up bowl QUICK.

On the bench, rthe old box sulks and leaks more oil. Just move it a nanomicromillimetre and it starts gouting oil from any available orifice. Using the cash converter from the old box. Let's drain that - another 4.5 metric gallones of ATF. New box isn't new at all but has been idle for 2-3 years. Poised and waiting like a revenge driven fuckpig, I turn it upside down to whip the sump off and fit a new filter. BAD MOVE as there are still 17 gallons of ATF that spread like hot Herpes all over the work bench. Can't stop it so let it drain.

That's the last of it, right?

No.

Stand the box on it's tail to lower the talk perverter in and MOOAAAR comes out of the breather. Fucking Hell! Like dogshit of your shoe this fucking stuff multiplies. It breeds, seriously.

Basically then, any attempt at draining an auto box is futile. 6.5 litres went in, but somehow as if by magic there are now 6.5 Imperialbastarding gallons. At least it's easy to mop up.

The XM swallowed nearly 6 litres of dextron 2 when I drained and refilled it. My puma barely took 2 litres!

That's very very funny! Have a like, your Reverence.

Thanks.

Draining an engine or manual box - no probs as the lube surrenders like a Frenchman. Out it comes.

Autobox?  ATF must stand for Afghan Taliban Fighters because whilst some gives up, a never ending supply of the bastards hides in there, in the ZF and Borg Warner mountain caves, ready to piss out when least expected.

Sorry to laugh but I don't know what's funnier, Rev. your description or me picturing it in my mind.   Only those who  have failed repeatedly to get a B  series oil filter to seal  on a Farina can imagine the kind of mess you must have to clean up .

Is 6.5L the oil change figure? As I'm sure you know when you change an auto box oil you only get about 1/2 out, rest stays in cooler, converter etc. My BM had a 5 speed ZF that took 13.5L from scratch.

TH350 takes just under 12 litres from empty, but only 6 1/2 come out during a drain.

So when you rebuild one, ca. 5 1/2 litres convert your workshop into the Prince William Sound.

Guess how I know.

GB350 for a Leyland takes 4.5 gallons plus if it has a charged flywheel (filled from gearbox as opposed from being separate) it around 6.5 gallons. That's a whole lot of sawdust to mop that up....ahem.

All good for lighting the stove/fire. I found that rockwool is a superb soakaway for spilt oil. Just sucked it up.
