xtriple Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 I love the touring, cracking car.I had a load of BMW's back in the early 90's, mostly 7 series from the early 80's. Don't know why, I really rated them and had 728i's as my daily. Had four in succession and each one was a great car - roomy, quiet and quite quick and I was a proper hooligan back then with 'anger issues'. Really got into them and had (at the same time) a 728 (white, auto, lovely wheels and a few extras. Bought from a scrapyard as the airflow meter had packed up.... I had a spare!) a 1602 (red, manual and lovely. Really nice balance, lovely condition, felt like it would go on forever) and a 635 (silver, manual with a dogleg box and utterly brilliant. Bought it cheap as it had a 'head gasket' failure. New rad cap and it was sorted! Sold it eventually to a car dealer for three times what I paid for it...) Stopped driving/loving them when all the cocks started buying BMW's. I hated the image they portrayed.
Junkman Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 I had three BMW cars in my early days of motoring. A 525 e12, which was shit, a M535i e12, which was even more shit, and a 3.0 Si e3, which was unbelievably shit. Combined, they made for such a dismal experience, that I haven't had the guts to make another attempt at BMW car ownership, and it would take a healthy amount of persuasion for me to do so. This is just personal experience and I won't generally vilify a make that's held in such high regard by many, although I do this enthusiastically with VAG products, because they just are dismal tosh and always were, no matter what the hype. However, should I ever buy another BMW car, I will strictly stick to my pre-1986 dogma, because from ca. then on, BMWs became so hideously ugly, that the tongue writhes when one wants to describe them. I also couldn't bear the sickening sight of those eyesores in front of my house. On the other hand, I had a succession of BMW bikes and getting another one of them old rubber cows is certainly on my to-do-but-sadly-can't-afford list. Barry Cade 1
spike60 Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 I too am a Bm liker, owned a 1993 540i for most of 10 years, a fine if needy thing, had a 1994 525 Tds a couple of years back which was a comfy old thing for European jaunts. This week I went to see a 1989 750iL locally then came 2nd on the Ebay auction of a 750i not local, bidding blind, not at all seen. The only Reno I've owned was a 12TL, so not closely related to fast Clio's..
Junkman Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 The fastest Renners I ever owned were 4Ls, their mindboggling power of 34 PS proving a handful to harness.
