Tyre age and safety.

Hi all.

I've scored a set of alloys and tyres for the XM but i'm unsure about trusting the rubber that's fitted.

They are all matching Michelins but have a date code of 2006 and 2007, plus the car they were taken from was unused for a few years. Two look newish but the other pair are good but show slight signs of perishing in the sidewall. I've had new Michelins in the past with more perishing after a few years and they were fine.

I'll be mostly doing 130 on the Autobahn carrying orphans and kittens. Would you trust then?

2006 and 2007?? At least 3 of my cars haven't had tyres since before that to my knowledge. I'm going to go and look for dates on all my heaps now.

I didn't think it mattered if tyres blow out on Citroens, as long as you are approaching two lorries head on.

They are just about still safe, but if you are serious about doing 130 on the 'bahn, buy new ones. On the other hand, those Citroens are famous for pulling in a totally straight line when a tyre blows.

I can confirm this, a front tyre exploded at 120 on my CX GTI Break of yore, and I only noticed it due to the sound changing suddenly. I safely drove onto the hard shoulder and let it coast until it was slow enough to brake.
