Drivers window won't open and need a new relay

I'm looking for a bit of advice really I've got a knackered relay on my Audi Cabriolet (common fault apparently) so my drivers window won't work, so I've been looking on eBay and there going for silly money..

There's one I've found off an Audi Saloon which the pins match perfectly but with a different serial number and different numbers on the pins.

I'm not to worried if I loose automatic closing on a touch of a button as I find that a pain anyway but would it be worth a gamble as it looks like complex bit of kit as you can see with it opened up.

Swap the one from the pasenger side?

I'll phone me mate in Durham and see what he says.

Have you checked all the solder - common problem?

He says 50% of the time it's an obvious bit of solder

The con is the double plug

Thanks Brickwall that's very kind of you.

That's the problem it does all 4 windows but although the other relay has the same pins it's out of a saloon which only has front electric windows so I don't know if it will work plus my old casing will have to be used.

Cheers Brickwall there's nothing I can see with the human eye (not mine anyway lol) but I put it under an eye glass and can see what looks like a bit of white haze around a couple of joints and on the other board there's a copper colour mark.

I may buy a solder pen and see if it works, the board is so minuet that I don't think I would have the skill or eyesight to solder it up properly.post-9282-0-51234500-1394889473_thumb.jpgpost-9282-0-51366000-1394889563_thumb.jpg

On the lower pic there seems to be a blemish or burn through. Is that the bit you're kalking about.

Online scrappy search?

I don't think it's a burn mark it looks and feels like a metal pin that goes through the circuit board.. I was wondering if it was the white mark around the solder joint that may be giving me the problem around the solder joint..

I've given it a bash and it still won't work lol..

The pictures I've put up are quite enlarged as I've taken them through my old linen tester from my print days.

Hmm. I can't suggest anything more. The bloody things are  ridiculously expensive.

It seems the going rate for one is £55 plus postage on eBay for a second hand one....Apparently a new one from Audi is £240.

I could buy a complete car for that kind of money in fact I was thinking about going down that route and have a car for spares..

They are complicated cos on audis and most moderns since you can still operate the Windows once the ign is off but only til the drivers door has been opened and closed. It may also have global closing.

I took a gamble in the end and managed to get one off an 80 sport for £9 off good old eBay..

The pins all line up the same so it's fingers crossed when the part arrives...

There are two small solenoids inside & contact points that pit/burn their surface - a very gentle clean up with fine production paper will 99% of the time sort them, on the coupe it controls the windows & sunroof (if fitted) The switch should illuminate with ignition on

This was the relay fitted to my coupe

Cheers Grundig I will give that a go... Its just I'm not too sure where the contact points are and I couldn't see a way of getting into the solenoids as it is sandwiched between two circuit boards...

They should be attached to that copper thing in your 1st pic - sure mine only had 1 circuit board though

I got the new relay the other week but haven't got around to fitting it yet as my old one has since been trouble free.. But I guess it's good to have a spare.

All I can think is the car didn't like standing for six months and decided to have a hissy fit.

I think she liked the fact that I had the rear bumper repainted because of a bad colour match and I gave her a nice coat of wax and a good Hoover so the old girl looks as good as new again for the 1st time in a few years so she's decided to play ball now that I've got her back up to scratch :)
