shite automatics.

As mentioned, Renault autos are notorious and don't last much longer than 100k miles. They are a non-serviceable item and though they have fill and drain plugs if you look close enough, there's no dipstick so you can't check how much fluid is actually in the box. The fluid is critical to keep an auto box alive and the Renault box quickly consumes itself when it runs low, but you don't know about it until it's too late. There's also a small seal that perishes inside which is a cheap part but you have to take the engine and box out to get to it.

Mum has a 2002-ish auto Polo and the box in that seems pretty much bulletproof. It's a conventional auto in that thing, not a DSG.

The AL4 transmission on PugCits is also c$@p.

The 4HP20 is better but only fitted to the larger more powerful cars.  They are also "sealed for life" but at least a bit tougher if you do change the fluid and keep an eye on levels.  The older ones even had a dipstick.

I know they're about as desirable as Herpes, but Mk 3 Golf with an auto box are pretty reliable, , your budget should buy you a really nice one. Control box under back seat is usually at fault if there is an auto box problem, and re-con ones are available for not a lot.

I think that's it Richard. Don't mind Golfs but most have had springs remove and scene taxd and roof rack fitted
