UBM Motors 1980's. RS help/anyone have any info?

Following the recent mention of DMB Graphics on here, has prompted me to try once more to track down information on the business that first registered my RS1600i. As I also intend to order dealer plates/sticker/RFL holder.

After a V888 enquiry last year, records show that the car was first registered in 1983 by UBM Motors of Cardiff (505 Newport Road, South Glamorgan, CF3 7AD).

The only information I can find on UBM is that they were bought out by Evans Halshaw in around 1988.

Does anyone have any pictures of cars wearing UBM plates, stickers etc. or any relevant information in general?

What confuses me is that the RS cars were only sold from RS dealers. So I would assumed my car was probably supplied by Cardiff Ford, seeing as they were the closest RS garage.

Yet there is no mention of them in the DVLA records.

that is weird i thought the rs1600i was only available through rs dealers, so i would agree and assume they wouldve out sourced it from cardiff ford so you wouldnt exactly be mis leading detail wise by putting cardiff ford stuff on there instead if you can find it

i am having the same problem finding the designs for dealer plates, window sticker and tax disc holder for the mrs rs turbo, it was registered at appleyard ford in stoke on trent and it seems as if there is no info anywhere, that dealership closed in the late 80s early 90s, i was lucky with the saph dmb have the designs for trimoco ford dealer sets

this is nothing to do with what you have asked for but its cool as feck, i wonder if any of the conversions by them still exist today

Cheers pervy. That's actually quite helpful, I have never even seen the UBM logo before.

Definitely a cool conversion! Wonder how many they made.

That's a bummer about Appleyard Ford. If I ever find anything regarding them, I'll be sure to let you know.

Just cop out like I probably will. At least if you choose an RS dealer, the stickers will be cooler! :D

UBM Ford had Dealers in Bristol,Cardiff,Exeter,St Austell in Cornwall, and Winchester, and were an RS Dealer for the Escort. They were approved by Ford to sell their Turbo versions of the XR3, XR3i,and the RS1600i around the same time as Janspeed started to develop their own Turbo kit.The UBM XR300T is probably the most memorable XR3i Turbo conversion that they did.Not much help with the UBM design for the plates, but the colours were yellow, red and blue for the UBM letters.

In reply to the my thread on seriesoneturbo forum.

That answers a couple of questions, then.

No idea, mate. Quite possibly. They seem to like changing name, but staying in the same location.

They're still operating from there now.

I've been told not to bother contacting them though, cos they're arseholes and all of the old blokes from there have moved on now.

Sounds like seacow might be able to help you out! :autoshiteftw:

what an absolute bugger, its a shame these places that are still actually active dont embrace the history of their site, if seacow can help he will be my saviour, autoshite rocks

They look at you like you just shit in the glovebox of one of the shiny demonstrators if you so much as ask for the parts department, these days. So it comes as no great surprise, as frustrating as it is.

I need to visit a local Ford dealers tomorrow to collect a pre-ordered exhaust manifold gasket.

Those lads are spot on, happy to see old cars and will do what they can to help out.

They aren't the closest branch, but they are the best.

Shame me car isn't from there. Lol.

Yeah, there generally are appreciative people when you visit. It's nice to have the craic. :)

I found that article, but the pic links were dead. Nice one!

The Kamei kit is pretty cool, save for the tailblazer. Even that has cheesy 80's charm now though.

Those bonnet/wing raised strip things are pretty mad!

From S1T...

It was Godfreys before UBM, and Godfrey Davies before that. Amongst others .

They were Cardiff's only official RS dealer at that time, but Fordthorne (Abbey Garages) also supplied them.

We all used to go to GD's for our number plates as they had he RS dealer badge on them

the plot thickens, so did it remain godfreys while it was ubm or did it go from godfreys to ubm to godfreys? only asking because the dealer directory i looked at was from 1988 5 years after your car was registered? i may have earlier directories that were supplies in handbook packs so i will see if i can find them to have a look

Yay, more Shiters from the Potteries!

I'm guessing it went Godfreys-UBM-Godfreys. As there is no mention of Godfreys in the XR300T reviews etc?

Bonkers replied on the RSOC. I am not the type to question his knowledge on all things RS. :)

.......As said in another post, UBM were at Newport road for many years until Evans Halshaw bought them out in 98, they wouldn't have any records, Cardiff Ford known as Fordthorne were never RS dealers back in those days only UBM.....

Oh I've found a dealer directory from 1993 and it lists the site as Evans halshaw in that one

Those pics are from a guy with a 1.3L. I think the stuff is still on the car. Will try and get high res versions from him.

I wasn't expecting such a response. I'll stick a thread up for Appleyard Stoke, too. Hopefully someone might have something of use.

I read that Evans Halshaw took over in 1988. Maybe bonkers got the decade wrong by mistake.

As you have seen, nothing else says that UBM were still around in the 90's.

He definitely has some lovely cars. Have you seen them? I would like to.

Rumour has it that Dianna's S1 cost around £110,000?
