aircon noisy when off?

The 806 has developed a new noise, and it appears to be getting louder :-(

The air conditioning works fine, and is quiet when switched on.

However when the aircon is switched off there is a whining noise from the engine.

I guess that when the aircon is off that there is a clutch which is disengaged and therefore the pulley is turning but the compressor isn't.  There must be a bearing or something the allows this difference of speed and at 230,000 miles it's had enough.

Anyone know if this clutch mechanism or any bearing is serviceable?

Can they be removed in-situ?

Presumably if a bearing has seized and it now spinning on the shaft this is now a matter of urgency?

working aircon I would say.

Funnily enough the aircon has now packed up again and so the noise is now permanent.

There is just one belt that does AC, power steering and alternator so I will have to fix it eventually.  It seems that the bearing inside the pulley is a fairly common thing to go isn't that hard to change.

First I will try and get the AC working again.  I already fixed it in June/July (there was a dry joint in a relay) and I suspect it might just have the same problem again.

Sounds like the electromagnetic clutch and/or bearing on the compressor.

Today the aircon is working.  I'm pretty sure that it stopped working Friday because I was pressing the recirculate button and not the AC button....
