daveb47 Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Looking for someone who knows vw aircooled engines in essex/surrounding area.Got 1640cc engine, new Empi dual EPC-34 carbsNew 0231170034 electronic distributer with vacuum advance Have massive flatspot which i cant seem to cure.
jbz2079 Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 I am no expert but I Have two suggestions.Check the H.T. leads and distributor cap, I had a Beetle that used to hesitate when you opened the throttle and it was arching at the top of the distributor. Also check carefully for any induction side air leaks,I know yours won't have the original manifold with twin carbs but the twinport motors had rubber bellows on the head end of the manifoldsthat used to split and make them run badly.
daveb47 Posted July 20, 2013 Author Posted July 20, 2013 Build is new including coil/ht leads/all gaskets & joints etc
garethj Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Flatspot is usually down to the distributor, with the engine off, dizzy cap off and you sucking on the advance pipe, can you see the baseplate move? There are also weights inside which give advance at higher revs but at low revs you need the vacuum to advance it. Is static timing correct? I'm not sure where you'd start with a 1641cc and those carbs but if all is well and there are no air leaks (easystart sprayed on all joints when engine is cold) maybe tweak the timing a couple of degrees at a time. One last thought, is it only when the engine is cold or all the time?
daveb47 Posted July 20, 2013 Author Posted July 20, 2013 Its all the time Dizzy is brand dual advance type.carbs are new.You can only set timing with light as its electronic, second advance is about 37 degrees btdc
