i have this 205 gti with whats reputed to be a 1.9 GTi engine in it;

DSCF5598.jpg

its currently twin 40s so it looks 'non standard' and the bloke I bought it from said he was running the Mi16 engine then 'went back to the 1.9'

its got an alloy block - did only the 1.9 GTi motor get the alloy block?

I have looked up engine codes for these engines and the info is very confusing

the tag says PTC 86D (86D just out of shot)

but the 86D doesnt seem to relate to anything and PTC is common on a lot of these XU engines

so how can i identify it?

It says B6D, it's a 1.6 gti engine.

I was told only the 1.9 got the alloy block

I was always told that 1.6 and 1.9 were identical apart from the crank. Might just have been pub bullshit though!

i have just read on a forum that the 1.9 has a spacer between block and sump for the longer stroke, so i will have to check

Yes, they do; the 1900s had an 88mm stroke vs. 73mm stroke in the 1600s (hence the need for the spacer between block and sump to accomodate this extra stroke in the 1900s).

The petrol XUs of this era had alloy blocks with (seperate) wet liners; the XUDs had iron blocks with dry liners (all one casting). The 115bhp GTI 1.6s also had the same head as the GTI 1.9s.
