Edit. I'm not sure you're right Felly as I just googled Tourag Timing belt and it looks very similiar to the Phaeton picture Volksy posted. It also seems the v10 has gear driven timing so no belt either.

I had a 5-cyl 2.5 TDI (174BHP, IIRC) as a company car back in 2004. Beige leather interior = lovely, cossetting ride but with that (VWCV-derived) engine, underpowered (I think it weighed about 2.5 tons).

 

Like all SUVs (indeed 4x4s), not much good off-road (or on snow or ice) when on road tyres.

 

The V10 TDi... now that's a different beast altogether. A lazy burble at tickover like a yacht being maneuvered to a mooring, and torque that has to be experience to be believed...

 

To paraphrase the saying, if it was £40k when new but £6k used, expect repair bills commensurate with its price new, so I'd be very afraid without a cast-iron warranty...

does it have a timing belt at the front from crank to cam, and then another at the back from cam to pump like the old 5 cyl TDIs had?

 

If so you could leave the pump one at the back alone as failure would result in a fail to proceed but not a smashed engine. I think.

I had to laugh the other day. I was in a locksmiths in Chesterfield and there was a well tanned ‘considerably richer than yow’ couple in there looking like a pair of Louis Vuitton handbags. Outside was a black arselit Cayenne diesel. A bloke in overalls came in ‘Scuse me, ‘ooos is that black Hyundai outside? It’s blocking the gateâ€Â.
