Rover 75 want. Do I need my head checking out?

I really don't know why, but I just saw a Rover 75 for sale on a facebook buy sell group and for the first time ever I thought to myself I would like to drive one of them. It just looked right.... I used to have an R reg Rover 600 turbo diesel and loved it. Plenty of go, good on fuel and the best bit was it was gold with beige/brown/wood interior.

Do any of you have a 75? Or should I sort my head out? When the money situation is stable and I'm working full time I will definitely be after another bigger car..

Definitely worth a try. The cars have LOTS of silly little faults (like most cars) and a few big ones (not so much like most cars). They are insanely classy places to sit.

Just got rid of after 18 months and 30000 miles of joyful comfortable motoring. I had a 52 plate diesel Tourer. Did 45 to the gallon and was a bit of class( compared to the usual shite I drive!). I got rid of it as the clutch went. On this model it's a grand to replace so be careful of this. I also had problems with the injector seals that was another 500 to fix. Other than these two there were no other problems. My neighbour used to have a v plate 75 saloon that was no end of trouble. On the early cars if the sill are painted black this means they were thrown together by the BMW plant who didn't give a shit about quality and the cars with the body coloured sills were built by Rover who did give a shit! The early cars tend to be better spec'd than the later cars as almost everything became an option as Rover were trying to save money. Would I buy another one? Definately yes and my neighbour who had a bag of nails is awaiting delivery of an MG 75! They kind of hook you! Best of luck with the one you are looking at.

Yeah there seems go be quite a few listed as spares or repair...a few with the clutch needing to be done. Can I ask, why is it such an expensive job on this? I can do a clutch myself so that's the labour cost removed.

What about engines, most reliable?

On mine the clutch and the flywheel had to by replaced together. The cheapest I could find of fleabuy was £400. The rest was labour charges as I'm a bit of a girl with a spanner! I let the car go as economically for me it wasn't worth it. I don't know about the petrol models though. As per the engine I had trouble with the injector seals. This seems to be a rare fault as all the people I spoke to with denzel engines had no problems with theirs. My nieghbour with the petrol model didn't have engine issues just gearbox and suspension probs ( his was built by BMW). Here's the link to the owners club. My membership has lapsed and I can't remember if you can get any technical advice free.

I've started to look at the 75 as a must have soon type of car,

At the moment they are still a reasonably common sight on our roads but I have a feeling that this will change over the next few years, they are pretty much at the bottom of the value curve and some parts are getting difficult to source, give it 2 years or so and price will start to creep up, my money is on the 2.5 with leather as being the most desirable future shite,

(1.8 club spec with cloth seats should be the shiter's choice obviously)

So tell me - was that a deliberate pun or unintended?

I got my father in law a 75 CDT 3 years ago, and its been a wonderful car, the clutch has been done, but the flywheel was ok and recently, the bottom pulley wheel exploded ( BMW common fault ), but apart from that and routine maintenance it has been a damned good car which does over 600 miles on a tank of diesel ( driven at motorway speeds ), so is good on fuel and very comfortable as well. Think of it as a FWD BMW and that's about it really

Definitely high on my future shite shopping list is a 4.6 V8.

I am an avowed roverphile and the 75 is no exception, but I'm a bit scared of all those models without that Jurassic yank iron for propulsion.

Their head gaskets are made from toilet paper and they have wrong wheel drive, I hear say.

Hence I'm saving up so I can go for King Kong one day.

But I oddly like the 75's Miss Marple ambience, I only miss a fireplace in the centre console.

Alternatively, I could warm up to a 1954 Rover 75 and sod this stupid MoT and Tax nonsense.

I've always fancied the V8 but that is stupid money.

If you look carefully enough there are some LWB ones out there with DVD screens etc in the back. They look like normally saloons but a couple of inches longer in the back.

Yes. I'm glad someome got it!

If I was to buy one, it would definitely be basic spec one. I don't do high spec cars. Shame they don't have windy windows and non central locking
