Well my pal has a 51 plate Astra 1.7 dti (i think its a dti) it's a diesel anyway.lol. Whats happening is when you set off in 1st it SOMETIMES makes a loud clunk and when your driving it it makes a sort of whirring noise. Also when you reverse the van will stop itself.....not lock up but it feels like your pulling the handbrake on.......it do's not do this with the clutch pressed on only when its disengaged?????? I know i'm being vague here and i'm probabley not describing the the faults very well buy your our last hope as it has us stumped.lol. Oh and to make it worse the sounds and actions it makes and do's are never exactly the same. Thanks guy's....Charlie.

Sounds like the diff is about to exit. Grab hold of the driveshaft inner CV Joint cups at the gearbox end. If they wiggle a lot, the box is kenked. IF you carry on driving it, it WILL grenade, and be worthless. Whilst it's still going, it has reconditionable casings. Failing that, it might be the layshaft climbing out of the bearings. The same warnings apply. Your Vauxhall dealer should be able to tell you the exact gearbox fitted, summat like F15, F30, whatever, along those lines.

^ agreed. I've seen quite a few locked up solid, bit like the old micras used to do.

Just been outside in the pouring rain.lol. Checked the C.V joint and there is slight play. You can feel the vibration when you hold the driveshaft with the engine running. Its making a metalic sort of noise.....like a rattle. Its a F17 wide ratio box if this helps.

Should be able to pick one of those boxes up from e-bay or somewhere. Allparts in Bonnybridge have a shitload of MK4 Astras in atm, one must be a denzil. Theyre dear if you just walk in, but you can ask for anything via their e-bay shop.

Subframe off job to replace though.
