Shortest valid MOT ever?

Went down to pick up the Merc from getting its MOT this morning.

Got in, started it up, moved forwards and then had to stop, and I got the "Lamp failure" warning light. One of the brake bulbs had blown! :?

Proof, if any were needed, that an MOT is valid only at the time of the test.

Anything similar ever happen to you?

Yep. I carried out a first test on a K plate Mondeo. It was perfect in every way. As the bloke left, he stopped to turn into the main road. Brake lights working. He reapplied them, and I watched the offside one extinguish.....

Also, a first test on a Corsa. 52 plate I think. I had examined the front suspension, wheels hung, and as I lowered it, one of the front springs broke. No grit in the strut base either.... Gr3 quality there Vauxhall.

Had my exhaust start to blow on the Samba the morning after the test in '91.

In about 2004 I had an 106 XSi. the exhaust had a big crack in it on the end of a box, as one of the hangers had snapped - the whole thing flexed if you swung on it. Not having a welder at the time, I gobbed a load of gun gum over it and use about 6 jubilee clips round the box in a chain to cobble the hanger back on somewhat. I stuck it in for the test and the bloke took pity on me and just laughed at my repair, but passed it.

With my green slip printed off and in my hand, the tester went back to the test bay and backed my car off the ramp. When he drove it through the brake rollers on the way out of the test lane, the exhaust snapped in half completely, the back half fell off and nearly pulled the front bumper off the car. After him and the YTS lad laughed their head off for about 5 minutes, they lent me a jack and a couple of spanners and I took the whole exhaust off at the downpipe, threw it in their scrap bin and drove around like that until payday.

I burst a brake pipe during the MOT test once. My friend was doing the test and I was sitting in the car to work the controls. I forgot to mention that the brake pedal had dropped to the floor and the car got a pass. I did get it fixed right away though.

I tested a Ginetta G26 last summer and blew the seals out of a rear brake cylinder on the way back to the yard.

My Laguna politely voiced "ESP faulty, consult your Renault dealer" in the middle of the braking test. Thankfully the tester acknowledged that the system had just got confused by the wheel movements but it was a tense moment!

Back in the early '90s my Audi Coupe passed an MOT without working sidelights and a drivers door held on with gaffer tape and rope, do I win?

I passed a Jaguar that would have got a VOSA prohibition on should it have been caught on the road. It was unroadworthy before and after the test.

My Toyota pickup passed the "inspection" last year with the L/H front corner light completely missing

The crank sensor on my 156 failed when it came to reversing the Alfa out of the mot bay. It had just passed, but then in typical Alfa style refused to start....

In the early 90's my Sud passed its MOT minus a drivers door.... I then proceeded to drive it 100 miles down the M6 to national Alfa day, parked it up next to a wall and bought a door at the autojumble. Winner!

Still have that car toay...maybe do a resto thread if anyone interested.

Ha Ha, yes. In 2005 i briefly owned one of those Tata 1ton pick-up trucks, bought as a non-runner, it needed an engine. Anyhoos, engine replaced, it passed the MOT and as i was driving off the forecourt the exhaust snapped at the downpipe and got mangled up underneath. I scrambled under and pulled the thing out, threw it in the back of the truck and shot off (noisey) before anyone noticed.

What are those Tata pick ups like? Always thought they looked like a really tall Merc 190E from the front when I was a kid... Ultimate shiters pick up truck, second only to the FSO?

To be honest it did the job it was built to do. Very basic with no refinements at all, but built like a tank and dead easy to work on.

The 2 litre turbo diesel was a tad underpowered.....gutless, and the wiring a bit crap but i had no problem trotting around the UK

and trusted it to do long distance trips quite often.

Would i ever have another one ?????.....erm ........no.

Shortest I know of was a taxi, Called in for a check by the roadworthiness "god squad" who are ruthless bastards. The car passed it's test and as the driver moved forward after the test a brake light bulb blew, He was put off the road instantly and fined 100 pounds for an unroadworthy vehicle.
