What is the difference between Girling and Bendix brakes (ZX

I'm motivating myself up to replace the rear shoes on the ZX, but reading the haynes manual it mentions Girling and Bendix. WTF is the difference?

If it helps, the front brakes are Bendix (I think), as they have random wires poking out of the pads (wear sensors?) No idea when I'm going to get time to take it all apart to get some proper pictures, certainly not this weekend sadly. But I'd be interested to know the difference anyway!

IF its the same as other PSA cars, then on the rear the brake cylinder is a different width, which means the shoes are a different size. NORMALLY earlier cars are Bendix and later cars are Girling (think they changed sometime mid 90's), but to apply the phrase normal to a PSA car is a rather lethal thing to do. Best bet is to take one side apart, then nip to the factor with the olduns and make sure they match.

Oh, and just be cause you have Bendix on the front, that means nothing!

Frankly IMHO, in current temperatures, you'd be mental to mess with rear fecking drum brakes!

Ah, I need to do them before Feb for the MOT, the handbrake cable's snapped, so was going to do a whole refresh.

Will spend an afternoon taking the drums off and having a look first I think.

Thanks for the info!

This bo11ox is standard fare when fixing the brakes on old PSA stuff, they seemed to just buy off one supplier or the other depending on what Russell Grant was telling them that particular week. Just buy both sorts and agree with the motor factor that they’ll take the surplus stuff back, or take the old stuff along to the shop with you when buying replacements.

Right, you've got a drawing of the Bendix rear brake set up in the haynes book o' good intentions, so pop the rear drum off and see if it looks the same or not.

The rear hub nuts aren't too tight, which was my fear when I tackled the ones on my 309 for the first time.

Once you've got the correct shoes, you'll need some "star washers" (I'm not sure they're in that "Bendix rear brake fitting kit" but it's 6 months since I worked on mine) to hold the mechanism together upon reassembly - being used to BL tin, this was the only extra as they're all much of a muchness realy (I could be in denial here!) :) . Also if you need new hub nuts they are about £2.90 each off the shelf from your local PSA dealer.

Can't knock 99p for a set of brake shoes though...

French car brakes are the work of the Devil himself, when I worked for a motor factors it was common practical just to send all the options out to be on the safe side, that said I recall Ford Transit's also being a nightmare with rear brake shoes.

Sounds like I'm going to have a whale of a time! Hoping it will be straight forward. Been told to take my last half day holiday next week, so will get the drums off and take some measurements and pictures.

Will have a look out for the star shaped washer, will look in the bendix pack later too. Oh, and 99p will be ok if they fit, or a pain if not! Can no longer sell them as sealed cos I opened the box when they arrived.

Yep, totally back what has been said.

What's on the front axle may not be representative of what is on the back axle and what is on the front and back axles may not be representative of what the servo/mastercylinder is!

Where there was no markings on say a master cylinder we just measure bore size and reverse referenced it from that.
