Twingo rear drum brakes

Hey all

Am I right in thinking that the central axle nut on a 1995 Twingo's rear drum brakes needs to be removed to allow the drum to come off? There isn't the usual grub screw set-up, it seems that the drum & centre part are cast as one unit.

Tks for any help! :D

Ooooh you haven't introduced this car... or have I missed something?

Can't help apart from saying well done. I need a Mark 1 Twingo :D

Yeah undo the centre nut, hopefully they will then come off,but you may find the shoes have grooved into the drums over time, then the fun starts!

Yes,remove the center cap,and undo the 30 mm ( late night memory ) nut,and then remove the drum;might want a gentle tap on the side of the drum to ease it off. I would guess the brakes would be very much like the Clio set up

You may need to de adjust the (self) adjuster via the wheel bolt holes. Feckin fiddly. Also sometimes helps to get the drum off if you put the wheel back on ............pull on the wheel while jiggling and turning it

In which case they will be prone to the friction material parting company from the metal shoe and the brakes jamming on.

Thanks for the info, everyone!

Unfortunately the car's in Germany & I didn't have access to enough tools to do the job over the weekend, so it'll have to be done by a garage this time (grr!).

I couldn't get decent photos of das Twingo this morning when I left, but she's going to send me some pics so I can post them up on here :D

Yes,on the Clio brakes, the wheel cylinders get leaky with age,and soak the bonded brake shoes, which unbonds the linings, and can lock the wheel up; have had a car brought to us before with the tyre smoking as the guy dragged it along hoping it would free the wheel !

Change of plan... girlfriend is now bringing her Twingo over to the UK for xmas, so I will get to skin my knuckles on it after all :cry:

The wheels are currently still spinning nicely, so hopefully it's just a case of changing the brake shoes.

Renault and maybe some motor factors will sell a brake show kit all ready assembled with springs and adjusters all fitted together;fit them to the back plate, connect the handbrake cable and hey presto ! New shoes and cylinders should give a few years peace of mind with the back brakes,if not necessary now,but as a precaution for the next maybe 4 years
