tooSavvy Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 What would you do with this leg? Its off a low mileage Proton SAVVY... however it is a 'Sealed leg', not Cartridge insert. - I would have 2, but the donor was rolled and one was bent. I'm looking to do my legs (70k) and thought I could strip this, breaker spare one, to find an equivalent insert... No one lists anything for Proton SAVVY - Zombie Car, in all tech manuals  Closer inspection has revealed a sort of 'jam jar lid' affair, with dimpled spot welds [i assume], on the top of the tube. Nothing like a nut for removal  Does anyone reckon KONI 'cut a strut' inserts are feasible/cost effective http://www.koni-na.com/pdf/boltstrut.pdf  .... no source of new ones except through dealer (2nd Mortgage) or Malaysian 'Performance' outlets. I'm doing the hub bearings as well - as you see I can now do them 'off the car', slow time, ready to fit in a quick swap. tooSavvy
Morgan84 Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 You would expect to find a nut on the top,for which a deep socket ( maybe 19mm ) would remove with a impact gun;compress the spring, undo the nut and off comes the top mounting, and strip from there. I can understand it being a new damper unit integrated into the leg, which you would then fix the hub onto. They aren't all that old,so if a decent motor factor is struggling to find a listing, its off to the main dealers and pray its sensible money
cobblers Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 You probably know this better than me, but are you sure that they aren't just nicked off a renault clio or something like the engine? They look a bit like what I recall clio struts looking like.
Morgan84 Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 Proton used to be raiders of the Mitsubishi parts bin
Station Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 They all have 'cartridges' in the strut, just take the 'nut' off the top with an angle grinder.

Having no cross reference is a right p.i t.a Savvy is quite similar to Chevvy AVEO/MATIZ. - not struts  The wheelbearings are AVEO.... no, no one told me..I had to do a LOT of sniffing around  tooSavvy
Morgan84 Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 Can you get the genuine part number from Proton, then see if anyone can cross reference it ?
tooSavvy Posted November 26, 2012 Author Posted November 26, 2012 Can you get the genuine part number from Proton, then see if anyone can cross reference it ? Yes, webcrawling will throw up various P Nos, both Proton L & R but also 'Retailerr No' for aftermarket kit peddled to the home market. Plan is to pay £?? Fleebay prices for a suitable 'alt part/component' rather than going to new stock @ £ !! Just asking here to see if anyone has had to be creative with their $h1t€, and have some tips  If I'm correct in recalling.... A guy with a STELLAR had it on axlestands for a while whilst searching out alternatives, cos of bad rust issues  tooSavvy
