Metal cutting advice

Recommended Posts

Hi

I am in the process of doing some work on my 1979 Volvo 343 (see thread here, and I will update it soon: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=13897).

I've run into some difficulty with metal cutting, and I was hoping that a few of you who have done similar jobs might be able to give me some advice. I need to cut out some of the rusty metal deep inside the front passenger wheelarch. It's far too poky to get the angle grinder in there, and I think that would be much too brutal anyway. Tin snips wouldn't easily work either. Here are a few pictures - hopefully you can tell what I need to cut out! The view is upwards just behind the spring. The top bit where there is shiny new metal is an old weld patch that someone has previously put in place from inside the engine bay.

I went to Machine Mart for some advice earlier, and they suggested this: http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/produ ... y-tool-kit. I think it should do what I want, but I'm a bit worried that it won't be powerful enough to slice through metal. Has anyone got any experience of using one?

Hack away what you can with grinder and tinsnips then attack what's left with hammer and chisel, a nice sharp chisel. If it's hard work to cut away then it's good enough to weld.

A battery drill with a selection of wire brush attachments might do the trick. I think a Dremel type tool is going to take ages.

I'd think a new 1mm cutting disc should reach that. You might end up taking off slightly more than you want but you can always weld it back up.
