Question for the MOT testers

How much does an MOT cost?

Not the price to the customer but how much do you pay to the ministry each time you do a test?

This isnt a knocking the price of a test thread but I was just wondering how the money side works, stations around here charge £35-£55 and the one I use is £55 but £32.50 to trade.

So they still make profit at £32.50 despite employing a tester on about £10 per hour and the test takes 45 minutes, but if I take a real shitter and it fails stupidly it can be well over the hour mark, plus the money invested in the equipment plus the rent/rates/insurance and everything that goes with it, the recalibration etc etc etc

I think that the test slots cost around £1.50, which are purchased in advance. A slot is only used when a pass certificate is issued. VOSA set a maximum price for a test and the test is zero rated for VAT.

MOT slots are £2.10 bought in multiples of £100.

Average here is about £45 but I'd be more wary of cheap MOT stations.

At £19.99 they are going to try harder to find something wrong!

I've got a question for the MoT testers.... (this could run and run now!)

All these "scened" cars around us, with the tyres stretched onto rims they were never meant to fit, like a 165 on a 7" rim. Will those tyres fail the test?

There is no ruling to suggest they would fail, unless a structural failure was noted, or indeed a "Bead Rim" issue....

Indeed. On a class 4 test you only check that the same size is fitted across an axle and the usual tread/condition stuff. Class 7 you have to check that the size and load rating are appropriate to the vehicle. You can't even fail for the wheels sticking out further than the arch as long as they don't catch anything.

Welcome to . I presume you are in the trade. Do you have a collection of shite or have you had enough when you have finished a days work?

I have a modest collection of shite (A Fiat X1/9 and a K11 Micra). I am another retro rides member who has drifted onto here. I usually lurk and snigger but it was as if the board was asking me this question, I thought I had found my purpose for being on here!

Purpose for being here??? God Forbid! This is a guilty pleasure.....
