Patch it up,and vinyl roof it perhaps to cover what you can't hide

Posted

Yes sorry for the lack of pics, everytime I go down to the bodyshop where the car is stored I forget my bloody camera! This weekend i was attempting to balance the carbs and came to the conclusion they are worn and need rebuilding, luckily the overhaul kits are still available from weber.

If I don't find a donor to lop the roof off we are going to tig weld the sunroof up and weld up the rust holes and apply the filler, my mate who owns the bodyshop employs a Lithuanian lad who is a genius with filler as in Lithuania they can't afford new panels so repair what we would throw away. When done and painted you will never know. PS a vinyl roof is not an option

It's not so much a bad restoration as a restoration by a very enthusiastic amateur who not working in the trade didn't always have the neccesary skills and or knowledge to complete the work to a professional standard. The NOS panels he fitted were in poor condition prior to being fitted, not a corrosion issue but battered to death and consequently ended up with tons of filler in to try and make them half straight. It will live again but will be considerably longer task then the simple respray it at first appeared. :D

PS cannot believe there is not a dead tagora somewhere for me to raid for parts....

tagora update!!!!

Had a week off work to do a few simple jobs to get the tagora re-MOT'd.....

So Monday morning full of enthusiasm removed the nsf strut to replace the bottom ball joint that had a split boot with a genuine NOS part,as the strut came off it became apparent that the spring cup on the strut body had completely rotted through and was seconds away from dropping the car onto it's nose!Bugger.

To complicate matters the shock absorber is an insert(which are available)but the strut is rarer than a rare thing on a big rare day out. :(

Plan 'A' was to find a strut in the scrappys with a same diameter spring to cut off the spring cup and weld onto mty strut but rain stopped play.Plan 'b' involved finding an engineering firm to make a thick plate to weld onto the remains of the spring cup.Engineering company organised I had the strut, hub, brake backplate and stut top mounting cup sand blasted and acid etch primed.New wheel bearing, brake disc and caliper, top rubber mount and bearing and strut insert ordered I then welded the very well made 3mm bottom pate under the spring cup and sent all the bolts and washers away for zinc plating.Tomorrow is painting the strut and other items that had been blasted and acid etch primed in 2 pack paint.

Anyway back to other MOT items,I knew the idle was not as it should be despite several hours spent balancing and tweaking the gorgeous triple webers I had to admit the carbs' 122k had taken it's toll.Just out of curiosity I stuck my CO machine probe up it's ring and the hyrocarbons were through the roof(last years MOT was a work of fiction!)so that brought forward the planned carb rebuild. The carbs and manifolds are off the car now and another job tomorrow is to drop them off for vapour blasting to restore them to an as new finish prior to the rebuild.I suspect there is excessive wear in the spindles which is causing an air leak and hence the poor idle and high hydrocarbon readings(I have done compression and cylinder leakage tests and the engine is sound) so I may need to replace the spindles.Luckily due to the triple webers having been fitted to early porsche 911's there is still a big demand for triple carb bits so most parts are available from weber.

All for now but I'll keep this thread updated and I promise I will at some point add some pics.

Thats not trouble, its part of the fun innit! No fun in just going to rimmers and buying everything over the counter.

Posted

The bay of e is my rimmers, they don't have everything I need in stock though.....

Posted

Its more fun digging bits out of a field though and cutting through brambles to get to them !

And I would be very happy to hack through those brambles if I knew there was a Tagora buried within....

Are there many in France which end up as spares cars,or are they just as scarce there as well

Posted

They are relatively plentyfull by comparison in France. There are always quite a few on leboncoin.com and they show up on eBay.fr, in fact there are 2 currently listed on there.

At the moment though I am ploughing so much money into the tagora I couldn't fund a trip to France for a parts car, and the sea of French red tape I would have to go through. I did ask the question on here about exporting a car from France and had so many conflicting opinions I was more confused after than before.

I know a guy who was given a RHD french registered VW,and all he did was drive it onto the eurostar ( i think ),and that was it.I asked if he had to show all paperwork and documents, but apparently all they were insterested in was he had his ticket !

A guy I work with has parents who live in the south of France and they reckon its a nightmare. They bought a car from the next region of France and it took ages to get it re-registered in the region they were in and that was only to move a vehicle within France. Apparently their version of the local council hold the logbook and to get that you have to get the permission of the local mayor,if he thinks the vehicle has significant historical value he can refuse. Without it you cannot export the car. Or so I was told????

Posted

All complete nonsense! I'm guessing your mates parents are retired expats who talk to french folk in loud, slow english.

Theres nothing at all to exporting a car from France, you can just buy one, insure it at this end on the chassis number and drive it home, if you want to register it in england you need to bring the reg document (carte grise) with it, thats all there is to it.

Posted

Or I could put the plates and tax disc off my Tagora on it and just drive it back as though it was my car all along....

Posted

You dont HAVE to possess the Carte Gris (their v5c). It certainly helps but it is possible to register them HERE without.

I speak from Experience. A French car, in France is worthless without (quite literally) as they cant use/sell it; & it can be nigh on impossible to gewt a duplicate.. But if we buy (-for pennies) import, register & then return it to France they can get a new Carte Grise from our V5c!

I've gone thorough this very process several times (for my French mate Dom) -enabling him to buy valuable Citroen shite for nowt. Maybe doing something similar myself next weekend..

Posted

If you and Dom can track down a Tagora in france you would be richly rewarded! Ps there's an SX on leboncoin at the moment for 500 euros.....prime for roof removing.... Seriously, please get in touch if you can help. Thanks.

Someone may well shoot me down for suggesting this but how realistic is it to transplant a roof in from another car ? It's pretty unlikely that another car's roof will have the same dimensions exactly but they might be close enough. Thinking of cars like the 7 series Volvo or a recent 5 series.

Roof is yours for free (no kidding). 30 miles West of Munich, you have to come and pick it up yourself within two weeks, will got to the wreckers then.

Didnt somebody want the alloys? Contact me if interrested.

Astonishing sight. What's the story behind it ?

Bugger only just read this thread so I guess I've missed the roof...... I did think the same about creating a frankenroof 406 V6 but I don't think I'd ever be truly happy with it. Pshome thanks for the heads up Shaw I missed it. Is it only me struggling to get to grips with the new forum format?

Sounds like the same setup entirely as the Peugeot 504.  Cups would rot off due to shite building up and not getting cleaned out, and these are obsolite.  The inserts for 504 are readily available, and I wouldn't see any issue using 504 diesel ones for handling that extra weight.  The original 504 set up had inserts which were oil filled and could be disassembled entirely.
