Sorry... I just saw this Thread!... :D

Here it is!... It is a 73 and has lived all its life in Tehran! It belonged to my parent's very close friend whom they knew from college. He was the original owner and meticulously maintained it with all OEM parts and regular maintenance. The car wasn't driven much in the past 10-15 years, since they were living in Canada and would only return back for visits.

So about a year and half ago he decided to finally depart with it after 38 years! That is when I got a phone call from my Dad, I couldn't believe it!... He wanted to buy it for me... I was so excited at first, but later I tried to talk him out of it (my Dad is not a car-guy) cause owning something like that specially these days in Iran is not easy. Many of the parts are impossible to find, finding good mechanics are not easy and other hassles. But my Dad was keen on taking the car over; I think secretly he always wanted one of them.

It is a very emotional car for me, I grow up with the family and we used to go on trips up north to the Caspian Sea and I couldn't take my eyes off his car, in one or two occasions my Mum let me to go with them, and I had the biggest grin on my face sitting in the back seat of that car getting light headed with the gas fumes (notorious problem on those) and looking at the Alborz Mountains scenery along the way. I think when I was 12 I spent half the frames on my camera on the car! I got yelled at for wasting precious films!...

It is a bit hard to believe that we own this car now, it is not perfect and Dad already had to spend more on fixing up some issues, BUT I have no intentions of exporting it out of Iran. I feel that the car is part of the city. It has seen the 79 Revolution, it has survived the Tehran bombing during the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war &...

Dad gets a lot of attention driving it, behind every stop light people are asking about the car, mostly they want to know if it is for sale.

I can't wait to go back and actually drive it for the first time!...

I got a bit carried away, I stop here. Thanks for asking about it!....

Apologies about the quality of these photos, I took them myself about 7 years ago on a stormy night.

Looks great but thought it would be in the uk. Is there many of those in tehran? Whats the hassles you mention are they law related or is it that old cars are not popular there?

Beautiful car, Mr. PaykanHunter!

How difficult is it to obtain parts in Iran these days? Does BMW still have any sort of presence in the country? Don't worry, if the Cubans can keep 60 year old American cars running on the streets of Havana without any access to spare parts, I'm sure your local mechanics will discover ingenious solutions to keep existing cars on the road indefinitely.

Good luck with the BMW!

Thank You!... As I said it is not perfect, needs some body work, but overall one of the cleanest examples. There are not many of them left, but usually are kept by enthusiast, there are some very clean examples around indeed.

The hassle of driving/maintain a car like this in a developing/3rd world country like Iran. At some point they were going to outlaw old cars, but then they realized that they can't really enforce it. Lots of older Paykans went to the scrapper as a result thu.

Dad had to get newer (Euro Size) plate for it, which I HATE! Those US-Spec plates were so beautiful, and nostalgic, but Paying attention to old classic are the bottom of the list on Ahmadinejad's regime I am sure about that!...

Yes there used to be a lot of genius mechanical solutions there, since everybody was driving 70s cars all the way till mid 90s . But you need to know that streets of Iran is full of new cars now, all locally produced. Iran makes 1.6 Million cars annually, which makes it the biggest producers of cars in Middle east. So finding trusted mechanics who know what to do with a 2002 has been difficult, and costly...

Here are some images of the 1st Annual Bimmerfest that was held in Tehran just few months ago. They even invited a German dude who I believe runs an E12 Forum.

You see?... If you show more enthusiasm toward our Paykan you might get a free ticket to Tehran for the next Paykan Gathering Event!!!!
