driving in Europe, what weekend to avoid?

I know from previous experience that hitting the French road network on the wrong weekend end July / begin August is a big mistake.

 

Anyone know which weekend it will be this year that they all hit the road? Is it Saturday July 28th? What about Italy?

we landed in Paris on bastele (sp)weekend a couple of years ago. getting out was tricky, but it was super quiet at the time we happened upon the arc de triumph.

getting back in to the flow of traffic was tricky though.

I think the roads will be clear because they can't afford the petrol or the holidays... like most of us.

£138 return on Eurotunnel. This is dates in school holidays. I've never seen it so cheap. Is everyone staying home to watch the Olympics?
