vivalariva Posted August 5, 2012 Author Posted August 5, 2012 How come I don't get sent updates to my thread then? Thank you to everyone for their various bits of input Right then, I whipped out my welder this morning/afternoon & tried my hand. This is the result so far: There has been some penetration, but not in a good way. Obviously there's room for improvement but I've got the rest of the afternoon for that. I'm going to offer my helper services here too, since you and Daisy are on my doorstep being in Chesterfield and all. My strengths are more on the cosmetic side of things, and being an extra pair of hands rather than mechanical and welding but it seems rude not to offer the help if it's of use to you. That'll certainly be handy, and much appreciated, after the weld-a-thon!
Albert Ross Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 Not a bad start at all. Good that you've marked all your settings too. Won't be long before you can sign your name or draw smileys, just like wot I can! I might even be able to come up and start you off, once I get life out of the way. Is it under cover or exposed to the elements?

You said it may be handy, no probs if you don't
jakebullet Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 What is the sheet you're practising on? It looks coated with something? Assuming it's not coated with something that will kill your weld (like zinc / plastic /paint) then I'd say you're possibly moving a touch too fast. Try slowing down a bit to get wider welds. Er, you are pushing the weld pool along ? If you're right handed you want to be going right to left. What's the other side of the sheet look like?

Er, you are pushing the weld pool along ? If you're right handed you want to be going right to left. What's the other side of the sheet look like? It's a sheet I bought from a car parts place brand spankers, definately not painted or plasticky. Ooo didn't know about the right-handed thing, I've been going left to right. The back of the sheet looks the same as the front.
jakebullet Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 I meant what does the back side of the sheet look like after you've welded on the front side? You can tell a lot about the quality of a weld by looking at the B side. Pick one of the better runs, turn the sheet round and see what it's done to the back. If you turn it round and there's no sign of the weld then you need more power / slower. At the other end of the scale if there's a lot of blobs of metal coming thru the sheet you've got too much power.
vivalariva Posted August 8, 2012 Author Posted August 8, 2012 I have an update, the weld-a-thon has begun! I have a confession though, this isn't my welding, it's a friend of a friends Drivers side footwell BEFORE[/img] Drivers side near seat BEFORE[/img] Lurking under the spare tyre:[/img] Time to get the grinder out!

vulgalour Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 Great to see all those holes disappearing. Just a tip on your pictures, you've added the tags twice which is why they're not showing up.

I had a bit of a grind, a poke & a hammer and came up with that /\. The raised bit seems to be a sort of sandwich with metal, filling, then obviously metal underneath. It's the bottom layer that's making the crunchy/crispy sound if you poke it so I'll be taking most of that top section off. If I fold the 'filling' (what is that stuff?) back & take out the bad piece of boot floor & get it ready for welding.

jakebullet Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 I like the artistic marker pen work, but it's usually easier to just cut out rectangles of metal even if you have to sacrifice some 'good' metal in the process. At least by borrowing a man you know your equipment is up to doing the job, and hopefully now know the settings to use.

Aww, I kinda liked the bubbles Don't worry I'm not going to try going round them, I'm gonna cut out a rectangular piece. Most of the bubbles will be coming off with that.

vivalariva Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 Decided to get the outer floorpan done, welder Terry, me, my rather understanding BF & a couple of guys from across the road managed to get the party started, Jasper the cat didn't help, no matter what he says... looks like something out of the A-team when the cars used to fly through the air Uploaded with ImageShack.us PS Outrigger before, And after.... (Terrys' handiwork) Meanwhile my little project is the underside of the boot & spare tyre gulley New spare tyre gulley outside, the beginning of: I know it's not perfect but it's a start. I haven't quite finished the bit on the inside of the arch as I got rained off. Just need to fill in the gaps between the spot welds & weld the top & bottom gaps and that should be that, apart from the tetraseal.
jakebullet Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Hope you remembered to drain brake fluid / engine oil before rolling or it could be a soupcon messy later. You'll also never learn the joys* of hot slag in the lughole doing it that way. 'Your' patch, you would have perhaps got prettier results if you'd cleaned back a bit more around where you're welding. It works better with less fires if you get rid of underseal / rust / paint. What's the plan for ye holey sill?
