SambaS Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I am having severe difficulty getting my handbrake button back on on the FSO. I refuse to believe it is possible for it to be this hard to do so must be doing it wrong. There is a rod with thread on, and a spring inside the lever. Then a washer and the button go over the rod and screw on. Sounds fantastically easy doesn't it. Well the rod wont sit in the centre, I can get the washer on with a screwdriver then cant manouver the screwdriver out and screw button on. It is impossible.
DSdriver Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 Can't see from the picks whether you have the thing off the car but if you haven't, can you release the other end of the rod so you can push it up the tube more and don't have to compress the spring, then reconnect it afterwards?
SambaS Posted March 18, 2012 Author Posted March 18, 2012 It's still attached, I think a seat will have to come out or both, in order to get the plastic console off and a better look. All for a button!
DSdriver Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 It really need some sort of bush that will fit over the rod and inside the spring to keep the rod centralised .Don't forget to put some locktite on to prevent the knob from coming off again.
SambaS Posted March 18, 2012 Author Posted March 18, 2012 I unscrewed it because the button kept jamming but unscrewed it a bit too far!
Des Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 You could 'kiss' your buttons hole with a drill bit, do this by hand, a bit of a taper will help the stiff rod find its way into the orifice, twisting back and forth as you're teasing it in will help, allowing you to screw it fully home right up to the hilt.I can't believe I'm not suggesting the hammer / socket / moccasin approach.
Pillock Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 the stiff rod find its way into the orifice, twisting back and forth as you're teasing it in will help, allowing you to screw it fully home right up to the hilt. I've seen documentaries about that sort of thing....
SambaS Posted March 18, 2012 Author Posted March 18, 2012 hahaha thanks for cheering up a droll but necessary thread =)
