I had to change the oil heat exchanger on this. It took a good five hours and you had to do it lying underneath, well into the night as well. I had to go inside to run my hands under the hot tap as they stopped functioning. Never again never again never again never again. Looking forward to being able to keep warm this year.

Part of it's the climate there. It's never quiiiiiiite dry, either too humid or not sunny enough or the dew point's wrong for all the box panels, seams and so forth to dry out fully.

 

It's always really humid here and unprotected stuff outside rusts spectacularly quickly, but on the flip-side all the box panels on my car on the inside get pingingly hot and as the dew point falls in the evening the panels are hot enough and dry out

 

That and there's more salt on the roads than on a cheap bag of chips. The butt of the Megane in that photo looks winter-grimy.. that film clings and gets dribbled down into nooks and crannies and gets to work on stone chips and badly painted areas and the like.

 

I've also noticed that Mostly Dry British Leyland Carpet seems to protect steel. Might be the oil that soaks into it acts as a protective layer, and the steel is likely kinda porous and absorbs the carpet's plasticisers or something. Looking at the way old BL carpet crumbles, it's possible...
