MOT Fail - Datsun Carb is toast - Any ideas

Recommended Posts

All,

My W reg 910 Datsun Bluebird SSS coupé has failed the MOT on emissions. My garage says the twin carb is done for and is mainly tamper proof. I trust his judgement as he is always fixing carbs on his bench. The garage in fairness spent hours on the carb months ago trying to make it run so it would do more than 15 mpg! Question is is there one out there going spare? Or would something else fit it? Any ideas folks :(

Twin carb(s)? or twin-choke carb ? Didn't these have a pair of sidedraught carbs from memory?

Yeah, twin sidedraughts.

Are they they SU-copies? Sorry, it's a long time ago for me. Single venturi with a dash-pot on top?

Yes, Hitachi SU type copies

Ok, sorry for the 20-question. What is the problem with them? HC high? poor idle? etc etc. Can you remove them easily enough for inspection?

Idle is good and driving fine, HC very high. Drinks petrol! Not sure about taking them off however, I am not that mechanicaly minded  Garage did mention the MGB as an option but he wants to have a good look at the manifold tomorrow to make notes.

Well, if you want someone else to have a look I am in Worcestershire, Worcester in the day, Bewdley in evenings.

It could be throttle spindle bushes that are leaking air too, if that's the case.
