The time has come for me to consider selling the VSX estate. Purchase of a new diesel Citroen and a much longer commute to and from my new house see me parking it up and leaving it unused for chunks of the time.

As members of the XM club and Autoshite know, I rescued the car last year from a garage, where it had slumbered since 2008. The car had 100,000 miles on the clock when I acquired it in May last year and it now sits at approximately 107,000 miles. After her lay up, I MoT’d the car, which required two new suspension spheres to the rear, plus a complete front to back exhaust system.

Ideally, she could do with a run over with a Lexia to clear a couple of faults showing – including setting up the suspension again as well as clearing an engine management light, which has gone off in my ownership, but has now returned. I think this is a lack of use rather than any major issue.

We shall detail the faults first – the ones I know of and I have a good knowledge of XMs, so it will be comprehensive. I am not one for misdescribing a car and what you see and know about should be the extent of the car’s issues.

Bodily, the car is excellent, with no flaking of laquer so common on Citroens. However, there is a small dent in one sill, and an imperceptible dent in the rear offside quarter, which would be a quick repair at a smart repair shop.

The rear hydraulic height adjuster is sticky and ideally will need cleaned. I have just moved house and have not got the time to sort this out.

There are a few lines of dead pixels in the left hand side dashboard information display unit – and a couple of bulbs are out on the dashboard (in particular, the one that shows the gearbox display).

Good points

The car is in a gorgeous Mauritius Blue, which is flawless and will readily buff up to a glorious shine.

Full leather interior in supple, unmarked black leather.

The sunroof opens and shuts as it should, as do all of the windows.

Remote central locking works as it should

Apart from a sticky height adjuster, the hydraulics are good and the pipes look in good condition overall.

There is no rust that I can see on the car, helped by a life in garages, both by its previous owner and the first owner, a banker in Canary Wharf, who kept it in an underground car park.

Strut tops look to be in excellent condition.

Auto box works as it should.

Good service history, and recent oil change, spark plugs and air/oil filters changed.

Stereo has code and works perfectly, with excellent sound through the many speakers.

ABS works as it should.

I have installed a brand new towbar but have not wired up the electrics, and a brand new Citroen XM estate accessorie electric kit is included, which will add a trailer connection to the car.

An excellent load lugger, which returns over 30mpg on a run at 70 mph.

With a weekend’s work and a couple of hundred pounds spent, this has the potential to be one of the nicest XM estates out there.

Please note that I have moved to an area with rubbish phone reception and it may be best to call between 1-2pm or between 3-4pm to guarantee an answer – or text and I will call back.

I’m looking for £1,250.

Bump for a real thread...

I have just partaken a Gentleman's Agreement (and an envelope full of wedge waiting) to purchase this fine french lovely from Mr. Campbell and I am literally VERY EXCITED!

Not collecting it for a while, so have a bit of time to get the ZX up for sale, but am looking forward to owning an XM! I'm having it without cow, but a lovely mint looking cloth interior and no towbar (don't want one anyway). I was taken out for a little ride in it last Sunday and it is a lovely place to be! Will make my commute more wafty anyway.

Sorry, as you were!

I'll check the hubcap mountain and make sure she comes with a really tidy set of them - will be the same pattern but I have two sets, plus a third set on the new XM and a set of alloys coming from Ireland too. Also coming from Ireland are 2.0TCT badges for the front wings, which, while not fitted, will be included - one is brand new and the other very good. Will get the tyre fitted to the spare in the next week too so I can steal the alloy from underneath the car.

Campbell

PS Excited about the new one too!

Cheers mate! I didn't notice it didn't have any badges on the wings, or that it needed them at all! Thanks for the hubcaps too, I need to put the ZX ones back on thinking about it, they are in the garage so they didn't fly off upon hitting a pothole.
